The building where I used to live in the early 80's has been destroyed.  Two of our friends have not reported "safe" yet.   It's unbelievable.

Growing up in CA and then the Pacific Northwest, it's shocking how things have changed.  We didn't used to have FIRE SEASON.

There have been countless studies for years and whatnot showing California and it's water issues and lack of forest cleanup is a significant fire problem. It was ignored.

I feel so bad for the people affected. Truly awful. This could have been avoided or at least severely mitigated.

We have that issue up north. We had major wildfires where several people died all because the utility company refused to spend money on fixing their grids. Even now, instead of putting money into fixing their grids, they'll do shut offs of electricity where sometimes people are out of electricity for days at a time.

Which, is concerning when you have a bunch of people that rely on medical equipment to live.

I'm watching CNN's live app in L.A. and one man who just returned to find his home completely destroyed to the ground went to look for his wife's diamond ring, a gift from her late mom, and he actually found it in all the rubble!  His wife had left it on the dresser.

He said the diamond was melted into the metal but he was crying because she begged for him to find it as it was all she had left of her late mom and he found it or what was left of it..

The reporter was even crying, now I'm crying!

I'm sure there are many many more such stories.

5,000+ structures destroyed and counting.

Lots of prayers and I'm thinking of driving up and volunteering at a shelter.  And donating clothing etc.

I'm too close to do nothing.

Thoughts and well wishes to everyone affected.

Mother nature is the great equalizer. Tragedy can strike at anytime. It's sad to see how quickly lives can turn upside down and what we value can be lost. Hurricanes on one coast, fires on the other. Life is so fragile.

If you want to volunteer or help out, some ways to do so:

Good he's safe. My company has offices in LA that have been shut down. So far I believe everyone I know there is safe. Hope they stay that way.

It's a complicated issues fueled in part by California's perpetually being at risk of drought and climate change. When high winds can spread a fire the length of three football fields in a minute, your fighting an uphill battle.

Interesting story - Steve Guttenberg the 1980s actor was interviewed by a reporter -he lost his home, tragically but the reporter had no idea who he was! He was in Diner which is a great Barry Levinson movie.

Prayers to everyone there. My husband will be there next month on a business trip. My friend is there now -thousands of miles from where she lives -to see a friend who just had a baby. She said the air quality is awful but they are ok.

I'm so sorry for all the loss and tragedy and have been trying to support friends who are there.
