Seraphim
Nice! Hope you guys have fun and Happy 150th! Thanks! It is officially on Saturday but we are going up Friday night after work . It's also my husband's aunts birthday and my niece's birthday . And on the weekend my son will be meeting cousins he has never met before. One of my husband's cousins we haven't seen since before my son was born . He is coming to his mother's birthday and bringing his kids with him . So we get to meet his kids for the first time. I believe they are a little older than my son. My husband's cousin is about 57 I think.
itsallgrand
You are going to have so much fun in Ottawa! Take pics! I'm spending the actual Canada day celebrations at a boat club by the river. A bit outside of the city away from the biggest gatherings of people. I'm going to sit on the dock with a drink in my hand watching fireworks and relaxing ! Seraphim
So what types of festivities are you expecting? We are hoping to make it to Parliament Hill but security is supposed to be outrageous this year and crowds will be HUGE. Our son is staying in the hotel or with one of my husband's cousins because he can't tolerate it. He had a meltdown last year. ( He is autistic) Then a huge family BBQ out in the woods later in the day. I am hoping to put up some nice pics.

Seraphim
It is sad really. Hundreds of thousands came with the expectation of getting onto Parliament Hill for the speeches and festivities and shows. The lawns were flooded out the night before from torrents of rain. So there was ankle deep water . The way security was set up no one knew where the lines were . People stood in lines for 5 hours to find out they lead nowhere. There were massive bottleneck crowds of people not moving that we got caught in. I had a massive panic attack and my husband had to start shoving people out of the way to get me out of the sardine crushing crowd. We got on a supremely over crowded bus that did not move for close to 2 hours that wasn't moving so motorcades to go by so buses were not moving. We left our son with cousins. He can't tolerate crowds at all. All in all out of about 1 million people who showed up in Ottawa only 25,000 got on the Hill. The city and government should be ashamed. itsallgrand
I watched some of it on tv. The crowds looked insane at the gates trying to get in!
Scoe141
That sounds terrible. I wonder if they were expecting that many people? You would think an event that big there would be better logistics. Good thing your son was with your cousins! Well, I'm glad that it's over. At least there's a story to tell?

I think they were over zealous with security due to threats and Prince Charles was there . Police were there ONLY to have orderly entrance to the grounds but other than that they had no interaction to help the crowd. And they might not have expected so many. But also Canadian cities are not used to setting up massive security ventures as we never needed it.
itsallgrand
The positive is nothing really bad happened with people getting hurt. Hooray! I avoided the big events here. There was 'only' one stabbing. It was by someone the person knew, and usually they are gang related. Still I'm glad I avoided that crowd - I just can't relax in events of that size
itsallgrand
I spoke too soon. There were actually a few more stabbings during the night. No wonder this city has the rep it does
