Many, including Landslide, The Dreaming Road and 525, 600 minutes. But, sometimes it's also because of the song's association with a certain time, place or person. Landslide is because of the lyrics mostly and the melody. Dreaming Road - lyrics and 525,600 minutes because of the lyrics and I associate it with a loved one who loved Rent and who passed away young just like the woman referred to in the song. Gives me chills.

The White Stripes - The Same Boy You've Always Known (My grandpa passed early in the month of December, but this song I think this song is about how it can feel like people's perceptions of you don't really change no matter what, and maybe it's just because you haven't actually changed that much)

Pretty tough to think about the beginning of December

The same boy you've always known

Well I guess I haven't grown

The next two songs, for me, are just kind of about the mundanity of everyday life, but trying to succeed anyway, even when you feel a little different than most people.

Matthew Good Band- Man of Action

Between the night and day

And so few eyes left open

Your forgiveness ain't a neighborhood that I'm looking to live in maybe

This world it wore me out

This world it wears you out

Soundgarden - The Day I Tried To Live

Singing, one more time around might do it

One more time around might make it

One more time around might do it

One more time around I might make it

The day I tried to live, yeah

Brave is hard for me to listen to these days. A good friend's son was struggling with his sexuality but would not come out to his very religious dad. I gave him Sara's CD and a card with the note "Innocence, your history of silence

Won't do you any good

Did you think it would?

Let your words be anything but empty

Why don't you tell them the truth?" The young man never came to terms with being gay and committed suicide the day before his 18th birthday.

I think the lyrics for Chill in the Air, by Amos Lee, are so haunting. Especially the "look on the bright side" part:

Well, the morning came like a freight train

Bearing down on me from a thousand miles of rail

Well, it came and gone and kept rolling on

Laying up all night with my tear-stained sheet as my veil

I don’t wanna see you again, I don’t wanna feel your breath

As you leaned on me so peacefully while we slept

And I don’t want the keys to our door, I don’t live there anymore

And I’ll do my best just to forget the dreams we dreamt

Well, the morning came with the pouring rain

And I felt just as empty as a pail

With the evidence and your crime confessed

Don’t seem right that it’s me who's spending nights in jail

I don’t wanna see you again, I don’t wanna feel your breath

As you leaned on me so peacefully while we slept

And I don’t want the keys to our door, I don’t live there anymore

And I’ll do my best just to forget the dreams I dreamt

If you feel a chill in the air

It’s my spirit hanging somewhere

and if you ever get scared

Look on the bright side

You got a new life

Now the evening’s come and I’m all alone

And I can’t tell if silence is my foe or my friend

Well, I’m holding on but I ain’t too strong

I gotta get some rest before that train comes back ‘round the bend

I don’t wanna see you again, I don’t wanna feel your breath

As you leaned on me so peacefully while we slept

And I don’t want the keys to our door, I don’t live there anymore

And I’ll do my best just to forget the dreams we dreamt

Dreams we dreamt.

When my boyfriend of 2 1/2 years walked out on me one night, suddenly, without warning, and never contacted me again (it's been 5 years), I couldn't listen to this song without crying so hard I'd start shaking.

David Gray

This Year's Love Had Better Last

This years love had better last

Heaven knows it's high time

And I've been waiting on my own too long

But when you hold me like you do

It feels so right

I start to forget

How my heart gets torn

When that hurt gets thrown

Feeling like you can't go on

Turning circles when time again

It cuts like a knife oh yeah

If you love me got to know for sure

'Cause it takes something more this time

Than sweet sweet lies

Before I open up my arms and fall

Losing all control

Every dream inside my soul

And when you kiss me

On that midnight street

Sweep me off my feet

Singing ain't this life so sweet

This years love had better last

This years love had better last

'Cause whose to worry

If our hearts get torn

When that hurt gets thrown

Don't you know this life goes on

And won't you kiss me

On that midnight street

Sweep me off my feet

Singing ain't this life so sweet

This years love had better last

This years love had better last

This years love had better last

Dreaming With a Broken Heart

John Mayer

When you're dreaming with a broken heart,

The waking up is the hardest part

You roll out of bed and down on your knees

And for a moment you can hardly breathe

Wondering was she really here

Is she standing in my room?

No, she's not

'Cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone

When you're dreaming with a broken heart,

The giving up is the hardest part

She takes you in with her crying eyes

Then all at once you have to say goodbye

Wondering, could you stay, my love?

Will you wake up by my side?

No, she can't

'Cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone

Now do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?

Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?

Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?

Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my, roses in my hands?

Would you get them if I did?

No, you won't

'Cause you're gone, gone, gone, gone, gone

When you're dreaming with a broken heart,

The waking up is the hardest part.

This is the song that wrecks me most. It's been 4 years now since I lost my fiance in a car accident. I was in Afghanistan when I got the news. I stayed drunk for a solid month but I finally picked myself back up. I felt like this song was written for me. Now, I'm happy again and in a relationship with the perfect woman. It's hard to imagine finding perfection once much less but twice I am one lucky SOB...

Grace is Gone by Dave Matthews

Neon shines through smokey eyes tonight

It's 2 a.m. I'm drunk again

And it's heavy on my mind

I could never love again

So much as I love you

Where you end, where I begin

Is like a river running through

Take my eyes, take my heart

I need them no more

If never again I fall upon the one I so adore

(Chorus)

Excuse me please, one more drink

Could you make it strong

Cause I don't need to think

She broke my heart

My grace is gone

One more drink and I'll move on

One drink to remember

Then another to forget

How could I ever dream to find

Sweet love like you again

One drink to remember

Then another to forget

Excuse me please, one more drink

Could you make it strong

Cause I don't need to think

She broke my heart

My grace is gone

One more drink and I'll move on

One more drink and I'll be gone

You think of things impossible

Then the sun refuse to shine

I walk with you beside me

Your cold hand lay in mine

Excuse me please, one more drink

Could you make it strong

Cause I don't need to think

She broke my heart

My grace is gone

One more drink and I'll go

Excuse me please, one more drink

Could you make it strong

Cause I don't need to think

She broke my heart

My grace is gone

One more drink and I'll move on

One more drink and I'll be gone

One more drink my grace is gone

Well thanks, I hesitate to even mention things but...I guess the thread title got me thinking a bit. Heartaches and breaks come in several forms for sure.

There were days for sure that I thought that I would never love anyone again...I can relate to those that have lost loves by breakups as I imagine the loss feels similar...maybe just less finite.

But honestly, I am very happy these days. There was a bit of guilt at first when I started dating again but as time went by I realized that I had a choice to be a hermit or monk or realize that she would want me to be happy. About a year ago I met someone and we are just that sickeningly happy couple haha! Life is good again...

Pearl Jam -

"Come Back"

If I keep holding out,... will the light shine through?

Under this broken roof,... it's only rain that I feel

I've been wishing out the days,... come back

I have been planning out,... all that I'd say to you

Since you slipped away,... know that I still remain true

I've been wishing out the days,...

Please say, that if you hadn't of gone now

I wouldn't have lost you another way

From wherever you are,... come back

And these days, they linger on

And in the night, as I'm waiting on

The real possibility I may meet you in my dream

I go to sleep

If I don't fall apart,.... will the memories stay clear?

So you had to go,..... and I had to remain here

But the strangest thing to date

So far away

And yet you feel so close

And I'm not gonna question it any other way

There must be an open door

For you to

Come back

And the days, they linger on

And every night, what I'm waiting for

Is the real possibility I may meet you in my dream

And sometimes you're there

And you're talking back to me

Come the morning I could swear you're next to me

And it's okay.

It's okay.

It's okay.

I'll be here

Come back

Come back
