Seeing a urologist.

Recommended Posts

So, I posted awhile back about having some problems with ED. After which, I went to a urologist and he basically was like, "do you have any problems with your heart?", I said, "no", and he gave me a prescription for some pills. I assumed there would be more to it, like understanding why I'm having the problems and what I can do to fix those problems, but he was just like, "you need to take these pills". It's not always "broken", so maybe there is something I can do to "fix" it, if you know what I mean.

Are all urologists like this doctor? Do you think going to a different urologist would be different, or do you think they will just give me pills and send me on my way as well? Thanks for the advice.

(This might belong in the sex forum instead, but I thought this is more focused on health, so it should go here. Mods, please change it if applicable.)

Urologists are more like plumbers/mechanics than psychologists. They just fix the problem they don't dwell on all the possible causes, except to rule out underlying causes - hence the heart trouble question.

See how the prescription works and if it improves things. If not, get a second opinion. Also to delve into other issues see a psychologist on your own accord..

Some doctors are like that. It was unprofessional to say the least. Fortunately not all doctors are like that.

However, the whole buyer beware and setting the tone for how you will be treated is always on you. Don't expect for the doctor to volunteer information. They are pressured for time, so if you don't put their feet to the fire, ask questions, demand explanations, demand to know what they are prescribing and why on earth you should take it and what the side effects are, etc, etc, etc, they will just give you some pill and move on to the next patient.

Don't just blindly take whatever pill is prescribed ever. If you don't like the doctor, fire him and go to someone else. Google their name and see what kind of reviews they have from patients. Typically you won't find much, but it can clue you in a bit as to whether they talk to patients or try to push them out the door as quickly as possible.

You may also consider trying a DO rather than an MD, some will have both, MD DO. DO doctors have a more holistic approach, not in the hippie sense, but in the fact that they spend much more time investigating your overall health, diet, etc and what may be causing or contributing to your particular health issues. You might get more of the approach you are looking for in terms of explanations and suggestions of what you can do differently to alleviate the issue.

Try acupuncture or some other natural medicine. I find that those practitioners care much more about you and your overall wellbeing than those doctors working at the big hospitals. At the hospital it always feels like I'm being rushed. They try to see as many patients in a day as they can, it's like a factory of sick people.

If you care about getting to the root cause of the problem then you should see a holistic doctor or naturopath or even a really good acupuncturist could do wonders.

I wouldn't say he really fixed anything. He just prescribed Viagra, which works when I take it. But, I shouldn't be taking it all the time, and, lately, I haven't even needed it, though I wouldn't say it's 100% working.

I think a big reason he might have just ignored everything and gone straight for the pills was because I have MS. He probably just assumed what was wrong from that.

I don't really feel like there is any psychological problems, yet it still happens, so who knows? Do you think a psychologist would be a better person to see than a urologist?
