A major screw up...

Hey guys, I screwed up pretty bad... I have this female friend. Shes like a sister to me, and have a very sensitive feelings, animal lover. SO... I pm`d her, that today I saw a roadkill dog, with his friend, this other dog, sitting by his side and grieving. She replied: dont do that to me, don`t start a conversation like that, it brings tears to my eyes, etc.

Then I thought it would be pretty funny, to tell her another story, about a guy who road killed a fox, and put it outta its misery with a fire extiguisher, because he felt sorry for the fox.

All of my other friends laughed at this story, and I thought that would be funny for her also... what an idiot right?

So anyway,as a result, she seems pissed pretty bad. Is there anyway i can un the situation????

Let her cool off. then without rationalizing defending yourself, or claiming everyone else thinks it's funny, etc. offer an sincere apology. Tell her is was insensitive and foolish and leave it at that. Question: Why taunt your "friends"?

Apologize profusely, and examine why you seem to have a bit of a sadistic streak. Why in hello dolly would anyone find having to put a suffering animal out of its misery with a fire extinguisher or anything else for that matter funny? Where is the humor in any of that????

Nope, serious animal lover here. These stories are horrible, totally designed to bring people down. Did you even stop to help the dogs? Did anyone? Gah, now I'm bummed.

You can't spring bad news on people and expect them to be happy about it. Learn from this to be a bit more discerning in what you share. And next time you see animals in trouble, stop and help them. That would have been a worthy story to share with her, how you stopped and alerted authorities, found the dogs' owner, got the one dog to safety etc. Do you see the difference there? It has to do with empathy and understanding what to share with someone or not. And the appropriateness of emotions over what's happened.

The fox was definitely not a funny story by anyone's standards.

Sorry, that kind of humor isn't really humor you should share with friends, unless you find the same kind of things funny. Sharing that with an animal lover is a bit insensitive, yes? Just apologize, and let her know it's just a stupid joke, and you realize it's wrong to bring up etc....

You can try apologizing, but don't be surprised if you receive a VERY frosty reception. If I were you, I would apologize, perhaps via text -- because I doubt she'll pick up the phone if you call. Apologize sincerely for being insensitive. Do NOT say something like "I'm sorry that you were upset" because that places responsibility on her, when really, your "joke" is the problem.

Something to consider: Is there a particular reason you tell these kinds of "jokes"? (I put that in quotes because I really don't think joking about dead animals is funny at ALL, and I wonder what else you might find funny that would be distasteful to many people). And, knowing how much your friend loves animals, why on earth would you think it was funny/fun to bring this kind of thing up? I have to wonder if, at least subconsciously, you did it on purpose to get a strong response from her. I don't know, but these are just things to consider -- your own motives and intentions. This friendship could end because of this, but perhaps looking at your own motives and intentions will help you with future friendships and relationships.

The fact that someone would feel the need to share these stories with me would make me question my relationship with them. I wouldn't want to hear about either story (especially as an animal lover) and would not find the fox story funny at all. The fact that anyone would find it funny is extremely disturbing, and I would think that anyone who finds it funny needs to get their head examined by a licensed professional.

Seconding what agent said. Part of having a good sense of humor and telling good jokes is knowing your audience. You knew she doesn't like that kind of subject, and chose to tell her anyway. If you apologize to her, it must be for what YOU did, not for how SHE felt.

And I like some dark humor once in a while, but even I don't know how what you described would be funny in any way. It's not even a joke, it's just a flat out depressing story.

Yeah i mean I am animal lover myself, and I always find animal cruelty too distrurbing. But the situational decision of this guy is pretty damn stupid as its is pretty funny. I mean I would`nt imagine my self doing it or even getting an idea like that. Its just that when it comes to imagination, some people have wierd ass decisions to make...

I mean, you can judge me as much as you want, I know my guilt and I aint denying it. Its just that when I was younger, I was too inexperienced and ventured into wrong side of the internet. One part of it was Yulin Festival. After seeing all that nightmarish stuff, I dont find road killed fox or dog too disturbing anymore. I mean most of the road killed animals are instantly killed, and let`s face it: animals are stupid enough to get killed in roads. All of you cryers here, should know one thing: there are worst cases of animal death than road kill...
