Over it before it starts

Recommended Posts

My husband has not worked since Aug 2014 and has not worked reasonable hours since March 2014. I have kept everything afloat financially, including paying the mortgage on our house when we didn't have tenants. We rent out our house while we live interstate and rent another house. He got a job today! I should be happy but when I mention budgets he says he has HIS credit card to pay off. I ask what else can he pay and he offers to pay our land rates which I managed to get paid off 12 months in advance and only need $75 a fortnight to keep in advance. Feeling very used right now and it hurts. I also mention that I have had a hand in every job application he ever made and just paid for him to complete an Aged Carers course at college.

Unfortunately when you are married your finances, assets, debt, etc. are shared. Paying off debt and getting a job are good, but you both need to sit down with a good accountant and financial planner.Anything you contribute to your own marriage including tuition and applying for jobs is a joint proposition.

You're making stupid financial decisions. Why would you pay 2 house payments off of one income?? Sell the house. Do you have an expensive car with a payment? Sell it and buy a new cheap one til you're out of debt.

Read the book The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. It will change your life.

His debt is unfortunately also your debt and vice versus. So it seems like you got married, but never worked out and understood finances and liabilities as a couple and the fact that there is no his and hers in that deal. As already suggested, get with a good accountant and get educated about how to manage joint finances and assets and in general how to start making better financial decisions going forward for the both of you. This is a situation where a neutral professional whose advice you can both respect would be the best option. Chalk this up to marital growing and learning pains.
