overthemoon86 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Hello ENA - I was contemplating something at work today, totally random, but what are your thoughts on tattoos? Big? Small? Placement? On men or on women? Do you like tattoos to do immediately judge their lifestyle based on their body art? I work for "corporate America" per say, but I work for a California based company that is pretty "liberal" and free as it relates to it's policies with dress code, ect. My boss has a tattoo and many of my coworkers do as well, however, I work out of our Northeast location and no one has tattoos here. I actually have three tattoos - one behind my ear, a medium sized one on shoulder, and one on my rib cage. All are very special to me and got them for specific reasons in my life. My boyfriend likes them and is fine with me getting more if I chose to do so. His family does not mind them, my family does not mind them. My coworkers have given me a couple of eyebrows, but that's about it. I have never experienced an adversity when it comes to tattoos. Have you? I guess I just wanted to start a general discussion around tattoos, love your opinions
Clinton Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 As an employer, as long as they aren't on the face, or can be covered by a shirt, I'm good with it. But if it comes down to chosing between two equally qualified candidates, non tattoo guy gets the job. If we're talking personal life, I've never liked them. But that's just my personal taste.
overthemoon86 Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 I agree, especially in a work setting, they should not be distracting. No one would ever be able to see my tattoos at work...yes they know that I have them, but if someone did not know me, they would not know that I have tattoos. I am a Recruiter so I have had some situations where I have told candidates they need to cover up tattoos for interviews as well as being on site with a client.
Fudgie Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I am someone who actually really doesn't like tattoos. In this day and age, I don't think anyone can make any real judgment about someone just for having tattoos, other than "Gee, they like tattoos" and "They must like ". People, both men and women, of many backgrounds get tattoos so it's becoming a real mainstream thing. Now, as for why I don't like tattoos, it's more of a personal "I don't want to get a tattoo". I don't really care if my friends or coworkers get tattoos. It's a highly personal choice. For me, I don't want my skin to be marked permanently, simple as that. I don't think of my skin as a canvas. There is nothing in this world that I feel strongly enough to ink my body with so it remains with me for life. When it comes to dating, I find them quite unattractive on guys. I don't like looking at a guy and seeing skin that has tattoos on it. I don't know, just don't like it. That's probably my one physical dealbreaker. When I did OLD, if I saw a tattoo in a picture, I'd pass. That being said, I know I'm in the minority here. Most people are fine with tattoos. I have no reason to believe that getting a tattoo will limit one's dating life. It certainly shouldn't limit your job prospects either, if you work in a liberal field OR you got a tattoo that is easily covered. Corporate America may look down on tattoos but if you work in such an environment, they are easy to hide so no biggie.
greta96 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 To each their own, I say. I don't judge those who choose to get themselves tattooed, unless it's the face or the whole body (because I find that gross). I would never get myself tattooed, because I'm just not into that and I fail to see the appeal. By the same token, I wouldn't date anyone with huge tattoos or sleeves or anything that covers a large portion of the body. I am absolutely ok with smallish, tasteful ones. Worth noting is that I met lots of men throughout the years who amazingly enough were dead set on never dating a woman with tattoos, thought it was gross and a deal breaker. But ultimately, I am ok with whatever people choose to do with their bodies.
DoF Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I've never seen an image of ANY kind that I would want to look at for the rest of my life or forever. Tattoos simply make 0 sense to me, I have none and will never have any. I also find them hideous on people, especially as the person OR tattoo ages. But that's just me, tattoo no tattoo is like color or music, whatever floats that boat. We are all different.
Stay_home Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I like tattoos but I don't like them in excess. Yes, I do prejudge people based on the type of tattoos and the placement of them on their bodies. The more liberal they are about the tats, the more ignorant or irresponsible they tend to be. Celebrities and athletes can get away with that because of who they are. They are their own enterprise and sell themselves as their own brand. But when you're working for someone else you have to take a different approach.
sara-pezzini Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I hate them, and i mean hate.....would never get one and would never date a man who has one. But different strokes for different people, this has been debated on here many times before......and everyone has a different opinion
Heather Dawn Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I have a lot of tattoos - some small, some larger, one that covers the entire inside of my right forearm. I also have a pierced nose. I've never, ever had a problem. While my office is super casual, I also know when to dress more professionally (ex. for client visits) and none of my tattoos are in any way offensive. If not for the fact that I have some self-control (and they're so expensive), I'd probably have waaaaay more than I do already!

Sorry I had to. : D
melancholy123 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I'd never have one partly because I think it would hurt like hell to have it done and I'm a wimp! But mainly I just dont care for them. I have seen some on women that are pretty and I have seen plenty that I think are just plain ugly. The more a guy has the less I like it. But it's each to their own, I dont have to like or dislike them. I do wonder what these tatted up folks are going to look like when they are older and their skin starts to sag! Do people ever consider that aspect before getting them done? I dont know. As a small biz owner I would hire a person with a tattoo if they proved themselves qualified for the job, but not if they were totally covered in them, meaning on their face or neck, in excess. I also dont like the look of those gigantic earrings where you can see right thru the hole. I think that's even uglier than tattoos.
overthemoon86 Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 I definitely agree with everyone, it certainly is a personal preference and what one decides to do with their body. I suppose the "taboo" surrounding tattoos has faded in some respects in the recent years and more and more people are getting them. I don't think it will ever be okay to covered from head to toe and not have some type of discrimination in the workforce...I think that is distracting and would be tough to get past professionally.
Fudgie Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I've seen tattoos on the elderly. Well, men that is, not men. I've only seen a couple elderly women with tattoos in my YEARS of working with patients. It's usually the men who had them, usually they were in the navy or something, maybe spent some time on boats. Anyway, yeah, they look pretty bad. The skin sags and the tattoos kind of look "blob" like. It kind of fades though. To be honest, the "it will look terrible when you're older" argument didn't really turn me off to tattoos. Everyone gets all saggy and funny looking when they get very old. I'm going to look like that regardless if I have tattoos or not.

But you have to remember that tattoo technology has changed significantly since those who are elderly now got tattoos so they could look a little better now when you age. That's if you take care of them of course

Do people ever consider that aspect before getting them done? I dont know. One of the funniest cartoons I ever saw was a group of seniors on the porch of the retirement home playing, "Guess what the tattoo used to be"

That's if you take care of them of course That is true. Very different methods of tattooing back then. I don't know how the tattoos of today will look when we are older. I guess that's something to find out later when I'm in the nursing home. In any case, I wouldn't sweat it. Everyone looks like a prune past a certain age.
overthemoon86 Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 Definitely! I am sure my tattoos will be the least of my worries when I am aging LOL

LOL Well they give you hard time about everything else, the least they can do is let you be who you are. I agree, they are super expensive! I am actually contemplating getting some ink done by a very famous artist in NJ and he is booked all the way through May 2016 with a $300 minimum. It would be amazing, but it would burn a whole in my pocket!
Heather Dawn Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I mean, we'll all be have wrinkles - those of us with tattoos will simply have wrinkles with a little extra attitude.
sara-pezzini Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Your avatar looks like you have tattoos on your face. Sorry I had to. : D hahaha so funny! Actualy this was said at the last thread about tattoos as well.....fav singer and song....and yes she does have tattoos....so does my best friend, and i hate it on her as well but not my place to say anything, she loves them....
browneyedgirl36 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I would never get a tattoo (I think I'd look ridiculous with one, and I can't think of anything I'd want on my body permanently anyway!) but I tend to not judge people who have them. I suspect it's because I work in an academic environment, and I would say close to half my students have them, and many of my colleagues do. I would never NOT hire someone at my job because of tattoos, for sure, though I could see a fancy restaurant or a really formal business environment not wanting visible tattoos on its employees because they DO have a connotation of informality. I think some tattoos CAN be really beautiful (just not on ME -- LOL!) but they have to be really well done and the subject matter has to be something I like (no naked women, gore, devils, profanity, etc.) and it depends on where they are and how many there are. Face and neck tattoos....nope. Same with knuckles -- I just don't think they look good there. My current boyfriend has two, which was surprising to me at first because he appears very conservative, looks-wise. He has one on his upper arm and another on his shoulder/mid back. He's an artist, though, so it's not surprising, and they don't bother me at all. You can't see either one when he's wearing a shirt, either. He said he probably won't get anymore, though, because he nearly passed out with the first two -- LOL! So...while I wouldn't have them, I'm not averse to them, provided that they're tasteful and can be hidden if necessary.
sara-pezzini Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I mean, we'll all be have wrinkles - those of us with tattoos will simply have wrinkles with a little extra attitude. Yes but if you have to iron the skin flat just to see what it says that's just something funny ain't it?
SooSad33 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I don't have any but if I do/did choose to get any, they'd be in well hidden places and not very big. Too many on someone looks odd. Can't see their actual skin. But to each his own. Iknow quite a few with tattoo's and usually they aren't too bad.
sleepingdonut Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 As someone that has no tattoos and probably never will have any, I like them on women. They wouldn't bother me at all in the work place, but then I'm not an employer.
