SamiJayne Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Can they use a General if you may/are be pregnant? if they can what are the risks? I thought I'd ask here before asking the surgoen whose ringing me later. x
pippy longstocking Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I think the surgeon is the best person to talk to ... also it depends on the op because of how long you need to be out for ...
SamiJayne Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 It's just to take a lump out of my breast, as biopsy failed to get a good sample. I just thought I'd prepaire myself!
Capricorn3 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I agree with the above - ask your surgeon as he's the only one who'll have the answers.
luminousone Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Sami - beside talking with your surgeon you could also make an appointment with the anesthesiologist since that is their specialty. Do you have to have a c-section?

I reckon they might offer a local rather than a general ,hope your ok darling ...but you just tell him everything and be guided by him ..
luminousone Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 So sorry you are going through this. When I had my lumpectomy they had me come in for a preoperative consult with the anesthesiologist and that was very helpful. How far along are you?
Capricorn3 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 OP: Are you pregnant, or only think you may be pregnant? Either way, your doctor will know what is safe and what is not.
SamiJayne Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 I have no idea if I am pregnant yet or not. we've been trying for a year. My cycles are crazy, 83days + and they get longer each cycle, I think I'm on day 82 now, no signs of period. I do tests every other day. Only went in about 3 weeks ago, as i was in agony over my breast, and found out i had a lump. Biopsy failed. Surgeon said no to local when I asked if they do it under that, and she said that they will want to put me under a general. But will talk to her at lunch which is about 2 hrs away. Just wondered if anyone had a similar problem. Dr said it'd be fine to keep trying as its most likely a infected lymphnode, and the inside has died. But then we thought the biopsy would come back with a result =P so I dont know now x
SamiJayne Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 And don't worry Lumi, it's a good thing that they are taking it out, means the pain will be gone. And I'm not worried about anything bad, as I'm young, and healthy, dont drink don't smoke, chances are its nothing scary x

And I'm not worried about anything bad, as I'm young, and healthy, dont drink don't smoke, chances are its nothing scary x Yeah it sounds more like an infection. A very helpful book for me was Dr Susan Love's Breast Book. She is a researcher and breast surgeon and her book covers everything about infections and cancer and normal functions. They will do a pregnancy blood test before surgery and it wouldnt hurt to have an ultrasound just to make sure. Good luck and keep us posted
lavenderdove Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 They can check to see if you're pregnant before the surgery. Or take an home pregnancy test. If you are pregnant, you need to disclose that to them because it might impact their choice of anesthesia, and if not then you're fine.
SamiJayne Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 Yeah I test every 2-3 days. I spoke to the surgoen, I have an extension number to ring her if I do find out i'm pregnant. As I won't be able to have the lump removed as it can cause complications. Joy! I will only ovulate 4 times this year, and we've been trying for a year. It'd be just typical if I'm pregnant now. =(
SamiJayne Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 my surgeon also got me an earlier appointment. 24th July! and I'm first one to be put to sleep!
