suggestions for activities/hobbies/anything

I'm trying to come up with way to help improve my life, but I'm having a very difficult time coming up with ideas/steps on doing so.

Right now, I'm working and going to a community college and will be transferring in fall 2013. My major is Computer engineering. So far, I've bought a JAVA book (880+ pgs) and just began reading it, and started working out nightly. However, i till have plenty of time to pick up a few more things.

Im looking for volunteer opportunities just to experience more and meet new people, but most of the ones I've found aren't really anything i'd like to do... Ive lost many friends over the years and only have a handful that have been very busy with their own lives. I love to play pool, go bowling, and play tennis, but i don't have anyone to play it with.

Can i get some suggestions to help get me in the right direction please? my goal in personal growth is meeting new people, having experience in new things, and have my own interests in life.

Thanks

I recommend volunteering for public fundraising events. Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming concerts, auctions, parades, or other public events that celebrate or support community or global issues, and contact the organizing group to offer your time at the public happening. There are usually many roles to fill, some solo and isolating, some group oriented. Since you desire to meet new people, do the things that will get you out among people. You might not make a lasting connection at a single event, but if you do a number of them you may encounter some of the same circle of people and they'll at least become familiar friendly faces.

You could also volunteer with kids, after school programs (tennis perhaps?), big brother/big sisters (bowling might be a hit), boys and girls' club (ours has a pool table). Or you could volunteer with senior groups or hospice. You might find some very experienced pool players, and have access to a pool table in their senior center.
