Waiting for a reply

You find someone you like on a dating site and you send them a message to say hello. How long do you wait without a reply before you assume that they're not interested? And if you do start a conversation how long do you leave it before you respond to each message? Is there such a thing as replying too soon and seeming too desperate?

Conversations on dating websites end abruptly very frequently. If you can't get a meeting or a phone number within 3-4 messages I would not waste much time on her/him. Mostly people on dating website suffer from the so-many-potential-partners-and-there-must-be-a-better-one syndrome. Women get overloaded with messages and don't reply most of the time. Try going out more often

lol first of all, if it is a dating site everyone is looking to hook up so this "replying to soon and seeming desperate" is a invalid rule right now. I think you should just wait for them to say hello, try saying hello to some other people you like also. I would advice you to reply once you see the message. I don't think it would come off as desperate if you are on a dating site in the first place.

Never noticed a quick response deterring interest on a dating site.

I am leery of people who always seem to be on or have been on within an hour. I imagine that it's the same for women.

Regarding how long do you wait, you don't.

You send out a few emails then go do something else for a day.

Don't just contact one person at time. You'll get one-i-tus and might make poor decisions.

Few people chat with just one at a time.

It's dating, internet speed.

After saying hello, I tend not to hang around, I simply just move on to the next profile. Online dating is like a game of chance in a way so it's never good to put all eggs in one basket where waiting for replies are involved.

In regards to time between replying to messages in a conversation. I think just be real and don't wait, when and if you're around to receive it, respond accordingly. If they think you're desperate and decide to ignore you then that's their bloomin problem.

I don't think it works with this kind of rules. If it's a website where you can see if the person is online/read your message/visited your profile and didn't reply, I assume the person is not interested, 'cause if so, I think they would reply right away. The number of messages is no rule either: if you are a guy and ask so quickly for phone number some girls might freak out.

I have experience this a few days ago..Guy contacts me first, I respond..we exchange a few messages the convo ends abruptly with me waiting for an answer from him....He answers next day we exchange a few more messages...he asks if we can go out sometime...I said yes we can hang out and go for a drink...never heard from him again..that was like 2 days ago, and I know he has been online, I'm assuming he is not interested or found someone better in his eyes.....right?

Yes!

I spoke with a friend who last just yesterday told me that he sent out 50 emails.

Worked on it all night.

Even if 10 responded, he'll be a juggling fool.
