What is the best way to go about finding the answer to this question without making it obvious you're asking because you're interested in him?

I would just assume he's single and just flirt with him. You'll find out eventually if he's with someone. If you have a mutual friend, then just ask them. But more like "Do you think (the guy) is into ME?"...because A. You'll figure out if this guy has talked about you and B. You'll figure out if he is single or not.
