peaceOfmind78
It's Friday, but it feels like a Monday. I'm thinking of leaving the server job after 2 weeks of training. OMG. I never thought being a server would be quite challenging. It's weird. I've discovered that I am more of an office type of person. I don't do well with sales. I guess if I familiarize myself with the menu, serving folks with what the company offers would be way easier. As I type this, I feel a battle of push and pull. I want to leave but at the same time it would be nice to see if I get the hang of it after 28 days. Any thoughts? Link to comment
Imthatguy
Challenging is not neccessarly bad. The question here is are you happy doing your job or do you absolutely hate going to work? If it is the latter, quit your job. If it's the former tough it out you'll get better. I worked in consulting for a while doing lab work. I knew within the first week I hated it there, and I knew I would quit as soon as I got my co-op credit. Not only was the pay horrendous but 50% of the people I worked with I hated. I gotta tell you quitting that job was one of the happiest moments of my life. And all I could think about when my supervisor was complaining about something i had done (nothing serious - I do my jobs well) was that I couldn't wait to quit that place. Link to comment
indigoblue
Just make use of your time there you never know what will happen and the tips aren't so bad if you think about it. I tried a serving job but didn't last long yet I wish I could have made the most out of it while I was there. If your 28 days pass and you still don't like it then feel free to quit Link to comment
25thfloor
2 weeks is nothing in the restaurant business. You have to get the swing of things. I waited tables for 20 years, and each new job had a breaking in period. But as long as i was making the money, i was fine. I did find my niche, though....I was a terrible 'diner' waitress....much better at fine dining. Link to comment
fromnywithlove
I waited tables in high school and in college and loved it. You meet lots of interesting people and get a chance to joke around and interact in ways you never would in an office. Stick around a little while and see if it turns out better. Link to comment
peaceOfmind78
OK. We'll see how it goes tonight. It's my first time doing this. Wish me well. Link to comment
Seraphim
You need to do anything MUCH longer than 2 weeks to know if you can do something. At the same time it takes a lot of grit to deal with the public. Link to comment

thejigsup
Being a server was my first job out of high school. Now, I'm a very social person with a photographic memory, but I HATED serving! I definitely have to have a job where I have my own office and desk. I just do. Like everyone else said, give it a little more time, but I think in your hearts of hearts, you know this isn't for you. Wait until you can find something better. Office stuff depending on the company has more of a future than being a server. Link to comment
peaceOfmind78
Well...it was tough! I wanted to succeed being a server for at least 3-6 months, but it was hard especially not having the experience. Ever. From carrying a tray full of drinks, walking with 3-4 plates in one trip to dealing with upset people who tells me to clear their dishes away after they leave. I had high expectations, but I found it difficult to stand and deliver. Yesterday was my last shift as a server, but the company did ask if I would be interested in working as a hostess. They all think that I have the personality that they're looking for. Should I reconsider? As always, I appreciate all the fabulous feedback! Link to comment
