Coughing after a meal

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I saw a doctor today, and I have an appointment with a specialist in 2 months. However it's worrying me and I decided to pick people's brain here to see what you have to say.

Months ago I got a pneumonia. I got antibiotics and follow ups. X-Rays showed no sign of pneumonia after the medicine, and no sign of the virus after 3 months. I was still coughing, but was told it was residual cough and to wait. So, I waited!

Summer came, and I was coughing but, once a week. And clear mucus. Like, water clear.

Then, at the end of summer, it got really humid here, raining all the time and I started coughing again. Now it's every 2 days. Clear mucus again, but it's like the weather is making me cough. Is that even possible?

All summer long, I started coughing after a big meal. Think, double cheese burger with a french fries and a coke. I don't eat out a lot, but the times I did, I coughed like, minutes after. Weird right?

And after the humidity weather we got, I started coughing after any meals.

I saw a doctor, who told me it wasn't allergies related, but he couldn't figure out what's wrong with me and I have to go see another doctor.

What do you think Dr. ENA?

I would see a lung specialist. I cough a lot but I am asthmatic. Maybe you developed asthma? I always cough after meals that contain a lot of sugars. I am sensitive to them and they tend to build a lot of fluid in my respiratory system.

Not to sound like a crazy person, so if I do, I apologize.

My grandmother had asthma and it was pretty bad. I saw her choke several time. It was, of course before she got access to a doctor and good meds, but still. Scared me.

Fluid is the respiratory system is bad right?

Is this why I cough clear like water mucus? Water?

Oh and, before the pneumonia, I got a few times episodes of non stop coughing. To the point where it made me shake, and I was full of adrenaline. I got jumpy in a weird adrenaline way.

I didn't know at first, but taking allergy meds helped it stop.

Asthma related?

I know you're not a doctor but you seem to know about asthma.

Thanks.

Most asthmatics also have allergies. Basically it is inflammation in the bronchial tubes and there can be mucous as well. The fluid is not water it is mucous. It could be from your throat or the bronchial tubes. The only way to know if you have asthma is by being tested. I have been asthmatic all my life but did not know till I was 30 and got tested.

I had pneumonia 10 years ago, and did the antibiotics all the way through. My follow up xrays also showed that my lungs were clear. I coughed still, and another round of antibiotics did not seem to help.

Every time I went in to the doctor (usually mornings) my temperature was normal. So my doctor thought I was just faking it, or something...

However - I was tired and slumpy all of the time. So I started to track my temperature, and sure enough I had a slight fever each afternoon - and it went higher if I did more activity, and lower if I got lots of sleep.

9 months later they finally sent me to the medical school. It turned out to be a sinus infection! And the reason the other antibiotics did not work was because they weren't the right kind for the bacteria involved.

So if you have not yet already done so, you should definitely go to an ear nose and throat doctor (otolaryngologist) so they can 1. Check you out for a sinus infection and 2. If not that, then why you are coughing while eating.

If they check you out for a sinus infection, you should have them culture your sinus so they can target your next round of antibiotics to the specific bacteria involved.

And by the way I now use a saline sinus rinse (kosher salt and sterile water) and I have never ever had a sinus infection since.

Good luck to you

My left nostril is working 50% of the time.

Whenever I mentioned it to a doctor, they asked about family history, and since my mother had a nose deviation, they think it's related and don't do anything else.

I will mention this sinus infection to a new doctor next week. Thanks.

Hi Ammanda, I had pneumonia a few months ago too! I was coughing up phlegm for months and months... had x-rays and blood tests and a plethora of other tests but basically I just had pneumonia and had to wait to recover from the virus. However, it is months down the track now and I am still coughing up phlegm, and it is usually triggered by activity such as eating/drinking/singing/talking lots/etc. I went back to my GP and she said that it's nothing to worry about and that often our chest can take a long time to recover from a nasty bout of pneumonia. So I wouldn't worry - I assume the same thing is occurring with you. It's kinda comforting to know someone in the same position though, 'cause I was worried too! If you are really concerned though, visit your GP again.
