Squiggy
In course of job hunting, i've stumbled accross management jobs for a "big box" retail operation. examples of such is walmart and target. with the help of others, what is the definition of "big box" retail? in management standpoint, what makes it differ from a mom/pop shop? anyone else in here have experience in both types of retail operation? if so, which is more preferable and why? i'm hoping to find some response to shed some light onto my curiosity. many thanks for reading this thread. Snny
My answer is not going to be 100% but it is based on experience. I have worked within four big retail chain corporations and one store that was owned by a family. The real difference is job benefits (big retail chains have more than small family businesses) and the protocol for requesting time off. Most family businesses are relaxed; especially if you are on everyone's good side. For preference, it all depends on who manages the store. 1 out of the 4 big chain stores, management was terrific and I got along with everyone. The small family business was alright, but I wasn't making much money or given many hours.
Squiggy
Thank you for sharing. I'm really interested in the management aspect. I'm a very good with hands on management, drawing 13+ years of experience. Bur I always find the need for more challenge, to me that will include people. I am comfortable delegating, coaching, and leading a group of individuals. In my head, I'll always be a hands on type of worker. My view on big box retail is less hands on work for managers. Which opens up other areas such as creativity thinking, planning and executing. All qualities that I am very interested in. I need more info to fully understand the role

RedDress
I don't work in retail but I've had different jobs over the years and I really see the two as completely different jobs. For the big box store... well... there's lots of people so there are usually different levels of management. It really depends on which level you are talking about. There are department managers, there are store managers, etc. Depending on the structure of the organization, you are really talking about different jobs there too. Sometimes you'll be in charge of scheduling, sometimes not. There's always an element of people management and training. Sometimes you'll be responsible for hiring, sometimes not. Again... it really depends on the organization. For a Mom and Pop shop - well, this can differ as well. It really depends on how hands-on the "Mom and Pop" are. Sometimes they are quite hands-on and prefer to do the hiring while you handle the day-to-day operations. Sometimes they are virtually non-existant. I think the reason why you aren't getting very many answers is that "retail management" can consist of many different elements, depending on the job. I agree with Snny, though. Money and benefits are likely to be better in a box store. As are future areas of growth.
