This has never happened to me..i have been very stressed lately and had to show a new employer documentation and rather than not having something and needing to come back which has happened to me with something else..i brought everything..ss card, id, passport, copy of birth certificate...i placed it in a zip lock bag and i was VERY careful on the way there..i also had to go to work after meeting with her to give in my notice so my head was all over the place..after work i got home and i could have sworn i had it but i honestly cann't remember..now days later i am realizing it's not here and i can't find it! all my documents in one zip lock bag..my chest is actually hurting worrying about fraude or idenity theft..i cancelled my passport and left a complaint with the FTC so they can watch my credit..but still..now for the rest of my life i have to worry my ss number is out there?? my picture, my passport? i want to cry..i can't believe this happened..i have never done anything like this before.

Have you contacted the police station? All the places that you might have left it at? I think the majority of people, if they picked these up, would have them back in. It sucks but it's not the end of the world. You're not the first person to lose any of these documents and you're not the last. It sucks to lose them all at once though.

Can't you cancel your SSN and be issued with a new one?

I feel you when you say that your head was all over the place when you lost them. I always stupidly lose important things whenever I'm stressed out. I lost my wallet, which had my only source of cash for a few days, while I was in another country until someone was kind enough to hand it in.

Don't stress too much. It will be ok.

It appears you're correct regarding the issue of a new number. They only do it if your number has been used fraudently. Maybe ring the place that issues the SSN if you haven't already and ask them what you can do. If you search for it on google there are many links, so you are not the first person to lose their SSN.

i didn't meant to hand a stranger my entire life!

i had to bring documents for a new job and i placed it together so nothing is loose or falling out in my bag but i guess now instead the whole thing fell out.

I really dont know what to do..change my credit cards? i don't think they can give me a whole new social..now i feel like for the rest of my life i have to worry about this..they can decide to suddenly use it 5 years from now when i am least suspecting anything and ruin my credit or commit crimes, whatever they do with that stuff

i filed a complaint with the ftc and ordered a identity theft security program online..i will have to cancel my credit cards monday and ask for a new one

I am really upset..my whole life was in that bag..i never lose anything like this..i don't get what happened..what is worse is my id was in there and i have another one..BUT if someone sees my address and if they dont plan on doing anything with it, why arent they returning it to me??

i feel like now for the rest of my life i have to worry about this and i am only in my 20's

Hey, Rose, I know you won't like this response, but...I'm a big believer in karma. In my life, whenever something bad has happened, it's usually been because of a direct action of my own. For instance, years ago, my car stalled at a light when it turned green. I then got it started and took off, but, two cars behind me ended up colliding, because they responded to green, before they did me not moving. Anyway, about 6 weeks later, my car got hit, no fault of my own. Or, once I lied to my (then) boss about being sick and having to miss an important meeting, and then I ended up getting legitimately fiercely ill. So, I've learned through the years to NOT lie, take total ownership for the crap I do, and stay above board and honest in everything I do. I just feel that my life is a LOT cleaner this way.

So, that all being said, as much as it totally sucks that you lost all of your ID I have to wonder if it was the Universe responding to you lying to this employer during the hiring phase. Like, you lied about your identity, in essence, so the Universe decided to whack you back and compromise your identity. A life lesson to always be true and respect who you are...

Just something to consider. Of course, if you're not spiritual, then you'll think it's just bad luck. lol

Unfortunately, yes, with your SS number and other personal info, someone can easily use that for years to come. I'd alert the credit agencies, law enforcement, etc.

You can cancel credit cards, but the SS number is lethal to lose. Karma? Not in that sense. But you were so worried about that darn resume your head hasn't been where it was supposed to be, was it? Everything but you SS number is no big deal, but they DO NOT give you a new one. I lost mine for a short time in my house. I knew it was somewhere in my house, but couldn't find it. I asked if I could get a new #. No. I found mine and have kept it in a very safe place since then. I would call them anyway and get a new card with your old number on it. You WILL need it.

Sorry to hear that you lost your important paperwork.

You probably will have to go down to the social security office to get a new card (it will be same number as the old one).

If you are worried about identity theft, subscribe to an online credit monitoring service. The monthly fee is not too expensive (usually less than $20). That way you will know if people are opening up credit accounts in your name and you can stop it quickly.
