Is Seth a good name for a Christian

I am a little confused by this. When we called one of our kids Simon everyone said what a nice Christian/Catholic name (in 7th Heaven one kid of the Pastor is called Simon) but when we were thinking about calling our second kid Kaleb people said that is a better name for people who are Israeli why don't you call your kid Adam instead. They said David and Robert is not a good name either. Who knew? I don't get it because those names are all from the bible and are hebrew based so what is the difference? I am not against anyone but partly I want my kid's name to reflect who he is. Also because I am originally from Hungary my relatives will be disappointed if the name is not a Hungary name already and if I pick a name that sounds Jewish they may see me as a Western Sellout. I like the Seth name but I am not sure. Seth was a son of Adam and Eve. I would appreciate any input.

I think you should pick a name you like. you can also give the child a middle name if there is something of importance you want to convey - ie, after a favorite relative. i would also consider giving a name that is culturally appropriate. what's a common name back home might make your son the target of teasing in the us or canada.

It is your child, so ultimately you have to choose. However, in my opinion, Kaleb is a perfectly fine name for a Christian. Certainly in the bible he was someone that was spoken highly of as being as being someone who followed God fully (Numbers 14:24).

I think that ultimately you should choose a name because YOU like it and YOU think it is appropriate. Seth is a perfectly fine name. However, I think you will find many, many people named David or Kaleb who are not Jewish or of Jewish descent.

i think that David and Jacob are such common names, they aren't associated with Jews anymore. Heck - just look at "Jacob" the werewolf from "Twilight." Pretty sure he's not Jewish!!

I never even knew that seth was a jewish name?!? i know men with that name who are not jewish.

no, not necessarily. I think names from the old testament are equally "Christian" however, if you don't want any chance of it sounding "Jewish" I'd be inclined to chose one like Philip for example. However, I'm sure there are plenty of Jewish boys named Philip as well.

In North America there are no standards for choosing a Christian name.

I'm a 56 yr old Catholic. Back in the day, they told my mom to pick a "biblical" name when we were baptized. None of our names were biblical at all in my opinion!! lol I was Carla Mae (Mae stood for Mary), my twin was Charles Ray (not sure what part of the bible, knew at one time) then my Sis was born six years later, and boy did the priests have to dig for something that sounded religious out of that name lol Sherry Fay (Fay for faith). Went to a Catholic school, and their sure were a lot of Mary's , and a Colleen Mary Murphy, and a Colleen Ann Murphy.

I don't think hardly anyone choses names because of the bible anymore. Just because the like it...like Hanna. The boy names you mentioned I didn't even realize they were hebrew or Jewish, or whatever. I have a friend who's into his religion and he named his kid, Benjamin Jedidiah (sp} I guess because his last name is Smith. lol

Just pick a name you like. Heck, you can even pick "apple" and say it was from the Garden of Eden!!

Oh! and the first 2 years of my schooling, I went to a 2 room school house, grades 1-8. Lots of Amish kids. I remember a kid in my class named Moses. I remember him only because he fell asleep during class and I thought it was so funny!

I'd just say don't do anything too out there so they don't get teased.

Seth is not too out there is it?

No Seth is not too out there. Short simple names are hard for anyone to find to make fun of. My son his first name is not biblical but his 2 middle names are and obviously is his Confirmation name. I made his first name pretty simple and almost impossible to make fun of.

The spelling Caleb is a popular Irish name. Anything from the old testament can also be a Christian name. Look at all the Adams, Ruths, Joshuas and Aarons. Well, Ruth would be more popular in a prior generation. The only thing that is not Christian sounding is if you go with a Hebrew word that is not a standard name like Aleph, Natalie Portman's baby, which I think is merely the letter "A".

Also, look at baby name books. There are many names that are the translation and equivalant of standard Chistian names - Juan, Ivan, Johan, Johannes, Ewan and Jean are all variations or interpretations of "John". That's just an example. And I thought Ewan was just unusual and trendy...when it is a very old name indeed.

btw, I have met a few toddlers named Seth. Just be careful to look at the popular baby name list to make sure its not the most popular name of the year.
