rose45
I was offered a full time position at a job i really wanted. I told them I would give my current employer 2 weeks notice and they have a start date ready for me. I received their offer letter and it is under "conditions" such as passing the drug test and also reference and background checks etc and that this isn't a contract and either party can change their mind at this point for any certain reasons etc. Should i still give in my notice or tell them I need to wait until everything is cleared to be safe? I definitely don't have a record or anything..i am partially worried about them calling my current employer(would do they do that AFTER being offered the job?) i stated my salary was lower b/c i really wanted to be considered for this position..and also fudged my title a bit..instead of saying i was a regular admin assistant i said i was an EA b/c i did support a director, vps etc and from time to time confirmed certain appointments or reservations and once or twice i booked a car rental. So i figured I can place this down on my resume even if it wasnt "official". Are these things just a formality in a sense? just a little worried I guess about everything right now. Link to comment
Anonymous 6
I'm not sure what your current job is like, but is there a manager that you could communicate this with? let them know that you have another job pending but you are afraid to quit in case it falls through? Depending on what your lifestyle is and if you can't communicate with your boss or not. I would either talk with them, or wait until the pending background, reference etc goes though. Unless you are absolutely certain that all of your references are going to pick up, and have nothing but good things to say about you, 0% criminal background and have not lost a job in the past 3-5 years. Do you know if they are looking at credit in addition to your background check? I was turned down from a financial institution due to having a bad credit score. You can look at indeed job insiders or "glass door" to see exactly what the company will be looking for when they complete these checks. Link to comment
Anonymous 6
p.s the only thing that they can ask your current employer is if you are employed there and how long, the same question that credit card companies, lease and loan agents ask- employers do not take those questions into consideration as far as "oh no, they are going to quit their job". turnera
I always heard they can't ask your employer anything except if you're employed there and length of employment. Link to comment
camus154
You're fine. This is all very standard practice. Link to comment
Ariel85
Bad idea to lie to a potential employer. You falsified your resume and lied about your salary and title. These are all legally verifiable by the new employer. If I was your new hiring manager, I'd definitely revoke the offer in a second, as I wouldn't hire someone so unethical. Link to comment
rose45
i definitely am not going to tell my boss about the possibility of leaving..i would just give in my notice. I am not scared of any background check..but just worried about verifying my exact title and salary etc. So it seems everyone is saying this is just a formality and i shouldn't be worried? And to give in my notice? Ariel--i lowered my salary to be considered..i didn't raise it and ask for more. But yes, my title i fudged saying i was an EA rather than a regular admin. I did help out numerous people in the office and felt it was more suitable. Thank you for the quick responses. really appreciated Link to comment
Anonymous 6
What is the difference between an EA and an Admin?? What is your job title on your contract (or agreement). I technically have multiple job titles for ONE job- Direct support/CRS "personal taxi" as my clients would call me etc. Link to comment

Big difference between being a EA and a regular admin. I have a close gf who is a true EA for a CEO. She does a lot more than booking a rental car now and then. My Dad was a SVP and had an EA who had her own admin. I think you took some massive liberties in lying about your experience. It's one thing to embroider a smidge, but you lied about doing a job you don't. If this company calls your current employer to verify employment, and they find out you lied about your salary and title, don't be suprised if they recant the offer. I would in a second, as I would not hire someone who lies. Link to comment
rose45
ariel, Im not sure if this makes a difference--the duties i have on my resume I have done before..so i haven't lied about my experience..i placed things on my resume that i did only once to numerous times. So the title is the only thing that isn't really official but the duties are there. I am really worried now Link to comment

How do you feel when people lie to you in your life? Doesn't it make you then mistrust them entirely? See to me, lying is a character flaw, and if someone will lie about something small, they would lie about something big. And I think people can be great at rationalizing why they've done it, and feel they had perfectly justifiable reasons, like you have. But, a lot of people don't appreciate lying to any degree. Particularly in the workplace. Moreso for a potential new hire. Just hope that they don't check too far into your title or salary. Link to comment
rose45
i feel really upset right now..i lowered the salary b.c i didn't care about the money. I am worried about the job title though..my duties are real and they can see or question and say an EA doesn't do this..but the duties included those of an admin role which I do handle. thejigsup
But that wasn't your title and you lied. That's not right. Link to comment
rose45
i kind of don't know what to do..i feel a lot of people embellish on their resume..i don't know if this a deal breaker to change it from blank assistant relating to the department which isn't really a great seller to employers/agencies to EA supporting a director and a few VP's. My duties are all there from those I did once to those i did dozens of times.. I was thinking of just asking my boss's opinion after i give in my notice and explain about that issue. Link to comment

rose45
i would say she is my main supervisor so I would have them call her, yea. Link to comment

I'd do nothing at this point, Rose. Until you get the firm offer, I wouldn't give notice, either. And I most definitely wouldn't tell your current boss that you lied to a potential future employer. If I were her, I seriously would wonder what else you had lied about while you worked for me. Link to comment
rose45
I am a little upset but a friend of mine said alot of people don't use their official job title if its sort of amibuous and creates more questioning..and she also said its not like i'm changing my title and making myself a director or manager. My official title is blank assistant relating to the department(i didnt place it in for privacy reasons)..it really isn't that clear and doesn't standout and since i do work for a managing director and senior vp's i was told by agencies to place Executive assistant and have my duties follow after. She thinks it would be a good idea to give my notice, express how grateful i have been over the years , ask if it's ok that they speak with her and offer her my resume so she sees everything out in the open and can use it for a reference. And if she has any disagreement if can either be cleared up or out in the open. What do you think?? Link to comment
chitown9
I would not quit my old job unless I knew that I had the new one for sure. You don't know if you will get the new job for sure.... Link to comment
rose45
well i have the offer letter..my background just needs to be cleared..i have no record or anything..i am just worried about my boss and that job title and if its going to be a big issue or not that big a deal Link to comment
