Yikes - what does one do in this instance?

Ok...

Had a job interview yesterday and I feel like I'm going to get it! The manager asked me if I would be going out of town during xmas and I said I may have a trip coming up but it's the day after Christmas so I told her I would be able to work up until December 26th! Well, I don't know if I've been hired for sure and my friend says we need to book plane tickets in the next day or two to save money. I don't know if I have the job yet, so I feel like I should go ahead and book it. I did tell her the trip would be at least a week but it wasn't set in stone when I talked to her!

If she hires me do I tell her immediately about this trip? It is September, so it's not as though I'm booking a trip in the next week or two. This is many months away. Or should I wait to tell her?

I would wait a couple days to find out if you got the job. If you have been unemployed for awhile, i think it would be more important to work than to go, unless you are visiting family. If you are just going for fun, I would delay. Risk paying a little more until you find out. There will be other specials coming for travel I am sure. A few days this far out isn't going to make it or break it. If she hires you immediately, it would depend on the line of work. If its retail, you are going to be busy the day after Christmas, and in some cases New Year's. If its some other industry, it might be your slow time. I can't say not knowing what it us. Anyway, I would just stay flexible for a few days. You may really want to wait, because what if she can only give you December 27th and not 26th off, but can give you a few days at the tail end?

I find it curious how many unemployed posters say they have a trip planned, and it supercedes a new job. Interesting.

Personally, if I were unemployed, a vacation would be the last thing on my agenda, and I most certainly wouldn't tell a potential employer that I'd been out of work, yet I already need time off.

OP - you will most likely be the new person in the department/company, so I would assume they are giving preferential treatment for Christmas vacations to their veteran employees and would expect the new kid to work the holiday time.

If I were your hiring manager, I wouldn't give you the job based on your vacation needs. Hopefully she's different.

I do have another job, actually. I was looking into a second one.

Well..that is different if its a side job. But if you are looking for part time or seasonal employment at a store, they count on the temp or part time people to fill in the gaps and overflow for their busiest times. They would need double staff the day after Christmas and the weekend after, as well as for the New Year's sale. I learned early on that forget about taking a vacation at Christmas time.

Oh, gotcha!

Well, if this is a part-time job in retail, and you told her you're not going to be available the day after Christmas, I couldn't imagine her hiring you. Being the second busiest retail time of the year, she's probably looking for someone to make more of a commitment, and work the peak times.
