Dougie_D
I know that looks is everything to people when they first see you. What are things that I need to be CONCERNED about when wearing CLOTHES? Also, if I'm the only person to judge when I buy clothes, how do I know if it really LOOKS GOOD on me?
Robin2904
Well it depends on what kind of style your going for. Are you looking for advise on casual wear, work wear etc? There are rules for each lol. It's tough to know what looks good, which is why I try to shop with someone. Even if the person isn't fashion savy, they can still tell you if something looks okay (fit wise) Some pretty basic stuff. Make sure something fits you properly. Fit is SO important. Have yourself measured properly. Things should never 'pull' on you, but at the same time they shouldn't be swimming on you either. It's hard to give specific advise here because I'm not too sure what your looking for.
Furtive
I've been in your shoes before, and as a man I'll tell you what I did. I'm about to get HGTV up in here, so prepare. Get colors that complement your hair and skin tone. It can vary a lot, so Google is your best friend. I found that one of the best colors I can wear is apricot, I would have never guessed! As far as grooming, that again is a place where Google can be your friend. How you should cut your hair and line up your facial hair isn't "just" related to a style you want. Some styles look better on some people, and you have to consider that. It all varies based on your weight, square face versus round face, contrast in facial hair versus head hair, etc. My Google and subsequent dealing on a forum revealed to me no facial hair, 3 inch on the top, short sides is ideal. There's a lot to think about. You also have to decide if you want to look casual, business casual, dressy, etc. Combine all those factors and BAM, it's you! Silverbirch
Well, i recently went to a stylists group workshop. I wouldn't say that I learnt a lot in the group setting, but I'm going back for a private consultation. I'm actually pretty confident about my own style, but I'm always very open to picking up more tips. There's a lot to be said for finding your own style - something which is "You" - suits your lifestyle and you feel comfortable in. If you really want another opinion, you could take a friend or maybe a sister (I would suggest a female) - somebody who you think dresses well. I know that for women, at the private consults, they tell you about what style of clothing to wear for your body shape, and for women, it's important (if you care about appearance) to have waist lines and hems at the right lengths for your height and shape. I would think there would be similar suggestions for men. It wasn't expensive where I went as it was run through my favourite clothing designer over here - wouldn't say mega bucks, but not cheap, but extremely well made and most of the clothes are designed to not look "out of fashion" for a couple of years so it's worth paying the little bit extra. They didn't go into colors a lot, but strongly urged everyone there to have a color consultation (they don't do it themselves). They said that since the 80's when the color consults became popular, the concepts had changed a little. In the 80's, they basically had the 4 different seasons, but I believe it is more specific now. They claimed there were around 12 different color ranges. With regard to hair, I recently splurged and went to the most awarded hairdressing salon in my closest city. Cost a fortune, but I was thrilled with the result. I got a relaxant (straightener) put in my hair, and they changed the shade of blonde. I'm addicted. Don't care if I have to eat noodles to save the money, I'm going back. Worth every cent. Crazyaboutdogs
While it is important to be dressed decently, it often comes accross looking very fake when people try too hard. I see men and women who always look like they are getting ready to be in a fashion show, and they just don't look real. It is not a very down-to-earth look. It reminds me of the picture-perfect room decors you see in magazines...it looks beautiful but too perfect to be able to relax and feel at home in. catfeeder
Find a company or two who's style best represents your taste, then order their catalogs. When they put outfits together on the models you can order the pieces and know they work well together. You can also find things of similar colors in different cuts on other pages and know that their dyes are reasonably consistent. For instance, if you liked the overall look of an outfit but hate crew necks, you can switch that piece out for a v-neck on the next page.
oldenoughtoknow
I would look around. Look at other guys (for a change ). What are they wearing? Do you like the look? Can you see yourself wearing that and being comfortable? Then, ask one of them where they shop. When you get there, find a sales woman about your age (or whatever age group of women you're looking for) and ask for her help. Explain your case. If they have the time, they can be very helpful and will guide you towards things they think you would look good in. They are usually a bit flattered that you ask their opinion and it gives them a break from just ringing up sales all day. Win - win.

guynextdoor
My advice is dress your age and form fitting. When going out you don't want to dress too casual nor do you want to come to a gathering looking like James Bond either. GL
DrKitten
Check out some men's fashion blogs and forums. General rule of thumb is, wear clothes that fit well. Don't go baggy or too tight.
Vincent Ruiz
Everyone has been giving great advice. I particularly like the one where you are advised to find a female worker and explain your situation. They are usually bored at work and love the whole makeover concept. They will definitely guide you in the right direction. She will know what is stylish and what isn't. But it is important that you stay opened minded and try everything because if you don't you'll probably find that you hate everything because it doesn't seem like you. Of course it won't seem like you because you've never tried it before. Be open minded!! Also like others said, wear clothes that fit you. This is very important because baggy clothes makes you look like a clown and clothes too tight make you look like a stick. Wearing clothes that are fitted to your body is a sign of confidence and that you are comfortable in your own skin. Also a nice little thing you can follow is that if all else fails, wear black. Black goes with everything and black looks good on everyone. Grooming is also important when trying a new look. I would recommend shaving that goatee off completely. It'll give you a nice and clean look and a look of vitality which is very important to women. If you are particularly sentimental towards it remember that it'll grow back or just trim it down. As for your hair, experiment with it, try a slick back look or comb it forward and spike up the front. Just try new things and have fun with it. You'll find something you like eventually. Remember, you can take an average looking man, give him nice clothes and a clean hair cut and he is on his way to being conventionally handsome. Dougie_D
Hmm.... So you think it's MORE about the grooming than anything else? That seems to make more sense. I've NEVER gone to a real hair stylist or anything. I don't know what I'm suppose to look for.
Dougie_D
Also, can someone tell me what color skin tone I am? I went through some steps to find out and I think I may be more of a WARM TONE? But people say I look good in blue? Wouldn't that be COOL TONE? But some say I look good in light orange and stuff. I don't know what I'm suppose to look for. no, the grooming is _just as important_. can you imagine a girl wearing heavy make-up to run a marathon? what about not combing her hair before going to a black-tie event? p.s.: sorry, I suck at color-picking. Robin2904
Also, can someone tell me what color skin tone I am? I went through some steps to find out and I think I may be more of a WARM TONE? But people say I look good in blue? Wouldn't that be COOL TONE? But some say I look good in light orange and stuff. Generally speaking, if you have warm skin tone (Generally fair skin. Do you burn more then you tan? Do you have a red undertone to your skin?) then you look better with cooler colors (IE Blue, green etc) And if your skin tone is more in cooler family (Olive, tan and darker skin) generally seem to be told that warmer tones look good on them. But there is a lot more to it then just warm and cool.... This is an interesting article on it that may be of help to you link removed Of course I wouldn't always go by this. I do think certain colors look better on certain skin tones and compliment them better, but Its not to say that someone with a 'warm' complexion couldn't pull off a red shirt.... Hope that helps a bit!
