Just came this thought to my mind.....not trying to judge, but i noticed that many europeans are more opened to an LDR compared with people in the United States....Im talking about people in France having courthips and engagements with people in England,Ireland,Germany.or People in Spain with people from Italy or Denmark even United States or South Africa and are more wiling to travel.Could be the mentality, the vacation time, the money ??? I ve noticed this quite a bit....

Optomistic girl.....i read lots of your threads.Im really happy for u and your fiancee.U do not see many couples that strong these days.Hugs.

I agree lol

I seem to picture them many many years down the track, shuffling down the road at snails pace, hand in hand with a tiny old dog talking about what foods they are still able to eat.

Europe has really great high speed rails as well. And they get more vacation time. The US does not have high speed rail, the country is huge. Flight is an option, but that becomes expensive to see people on a regular basis that way. We don't have the cheap fares that Ryan Air has either.

And it's more expensive to fly there than here. It's weird. It's cheaper for L to visit me here than me visit him there by at least $300

It's not money for me, I just need to see, feel, talk intimately to, and go places with, the person I am with on a very frequent basis. I could not do a LDR, will not do a LDR because I would end up either cheating on them or breaking up with them. Not good and not things I want to do.

The travel distance for most european countries isn't that big. I'm in Belgium, the french border is 15 minutes away in car, Netherland 1-1h30 depending on the traffic, same for Germany, UK is just a 2 hours train ride...

That said, i don't know anyone that is or has ever been in an LDR, so while it's possibly rarer in the US, it's not common here by any mean.

^ While it's probably not "standard", I also wouldn't think that LDR's are exactly uncommon in Europe. In fact, I know quite a lot of people who have/had LDR's. Many of them are Spain-Sweden, but also Spain-UK, then I know a Norway-Netherlands-couple (she moved to Oslo to be with him tho), and a Sweden-UK couple (she first moved to the UK and lived with him, now they went to live in Sweden together), one of my close friends had been with a guy from Denmark for years...etc etc.

And myself too.. had a 3 yr LDR with a Swede, my new bf of nearly 5 months is from Sweden too (coincidence, really!).

I think it's quite easy to maintain a LDR and still see eachother on a regular basis because as mentioned in this thread, flying within the countries of Europe is really not expensive at all (though of course LDR's really only make sense when you have an end date to work towards to). For example I can get a flight to Sweden and back to Germany for 60,- EUR normally, but it also can be a lot cheaper.

I see but some countries do not have economic problems such as Germany, Sweden (where I'll be moving), Norway, Netherlands etc.

So it's not all that hopeless

I do say that LDR is more common in europe ,not becasue im raised in East Europe but because i lived there ,and because of jobs, parents, school ,people live in different countries even.As u mentiones transportation is cheaper and makes it easier to visit each other.

^ yes, it is because of the stupid housing market especially in and around Stockholm. Even for Swedish people it is not very easy to find an apartment. Guess its one of those disadvantages that every country has, but its an amazing country otherwise
