I'm feeling really upset. I feel like a failure.

Recommended Posts

I'm 30 now. I barely make any money to survive. I want to go to school but I need to get my taxes done first because I don't even know if I qualify for financial aide. BUT I just heard that my cousin who is 3 years younger than me just paid of a Mercedes Benz, and bought a condo. My credit is shot to hell and I just feel like yuck. I don't know what to do I feel stuck right now. Anyone know what I should do?

You should stop defining "success" in terms of paying off a Mercedes Benz and owning a condo.

Don't compare yourself to the people around you. Everyone has different priorities in life at different times in their lives. Most of my friends and family members started working straight out of college or got a two year Master's degree and are now making six figures at fancy corporate jobs. I went to law school at 25 and am now 30, in massive student debt, getting paid less than a lot of my four-year-college-educated friends, but you know what? I wanted a law degree, and I have it. And so what if it takes me a few more years to get where my friends are? I'll get there eventually. I may even be better off than them in the future. Do I feel like a failure? Heck no. I chose my path, and I accomplished what I set out to accomplish. Having an education is, for me, infinitely more rewarding than paying off a Mercedes Benz (never liked German cars all that much anyway. )

If you're not happy with where you are in life, decide what you want, and do it. Aim for the sky, as they say, and at worst you'll fall in the treetops. It's never to late to change your lot in life.

I am the first person on my entire family tree to go to college and get a degree. Thats literally hundreds of people! Out of my dads 7 kids, I make the least, even though I am the only with a college degree (and I have a legit degree, not something useless). Do I compare myself to them? I used to. Did it help? Nope. It used to upset me that I was the one that did everything right but makes the least amount of money in my family. It used to upset me that I still have $35K in student loans that need to be paid off and they were freely spending their money any which way they wanted. I felt like a failure too.

But I don't anymore. I am proud of what I was able to accomplish, being the first in an entire family to get a bachelors degree means more to my parents than however much money their other kids make.

But for you, don't compare yourself to your cousin. She might have had help. For example, while my immediate family was fairly lower-middle class, my two cousins came from rich parents. They're the two ditziest people I ever met and it makes me grateful for my own upbringing.

You chased after a guy, but you learned your lesson. And you're only 30. If you still havent accomplished anything by the time your 65, than you can come back here and complain. Until then, get up, get going and at least start at a community college where its a lot less expensive than a 4 year university.

I'm 33 and can barely make rent also. I hold 3 college degrees, and haven't been able to find a job that pays well enough. So I can completely sympathize. The best you can do is stay positive and keep trying. You've already outlined your solution....Getting your taxes done. After that, try your best to get into school and keep applying for financial aid. Something's gotta give at some point.

I'm gonna try but I'm afraid. What if I don't qualify for Financial Aide. Even with a second job I can't afford school and how would I go to a full time job and then a part time job at night and on the weekends and go to school anyway!? I'm so afraid for my future. I can't save a dime.

I have had 3 jobs and gone to school half time. You can do it! If you want something bad enough, you will do ANYTHING to make it happen. Instead of chasing after a loser, take all that energy and chase after a degree!

Be careful about school. It used to be that a degree meant you could get a well paying job. That's not the case AT ALL any more. If your ultimate goal is to be self sufficient financially, make sure you pick something to study in school that actually has job prospects now in your area that pay well. Otherwise, school can be a big expensive waste of time and put you even farther behind. Saving is a state of mind - it's just self discipline - you want to save, then just don't spend, there's no other way.

I'm sorry but that last bit makes no sense. If I don't spend I become homeless. I don't have any extra money after I pay for my bills and rent. How can I just not spend money? On another note I do agree I was planning on going to school for Human Resources...thats what I am interested in, and I also have lots of experience in that field.

You need to think of a more creative solution to your problem. Spend less on housing. That may mean you need to move, or get a roomate, etc. Many places in the US are just too expensive to EVER get ahead in.
