Car warranty question....

Recommended Posts

I have a fairly new vehicle that is still under full warranty. Do I have to follow the manufacturers maintenance schedule (which is very expensive)? If I don't - and something breaks - can they void the warranty terms claiming I didn't follow their maintenance plan?

For example, I am due for my 15K service, which is $ 285.00 (I won't go into all it covers, but it includes a bunch of stuff)! Can I just go get an oil change instead?

That's actually pretty cheap. I have never paid - and never will - pay for an oil change. I have always gotten family members or the neighbor to do it for me (I Buy everything) and if they can't, I do it myself. But I watched my dad work on cars as a kid. Tire rotation/balance is good to get. I haven't gotten it done on my car ('99 Monte Carlo) and I'll have owned it a year in Sept (but it will need new tires soon).

Is there anyone who can show you how? Depending on your car, it's a rather simple process really once you know what to do. It got on my old Chevy I didn't even go to my uncle, I just borrowed what I needed from him (ramps, oil pan) and did it myself. I honestly have never heard of a fuel induction service, lol. I owned my little Chevy for a good 2 to 3 years and never had it done (and when I bought it, it had 165,000 miles on it) and I Have never done it to my car now (and it has over 100,000 miles on it)

I'd get the work done.

Dealerships will negotiate with you on service and maintenance, so see if you can get them down a bit.

I think that is what I will do - I will ask if they are running any "specials" on the 15K servicing (or does that not sound good?).

I'm not interested in learning do-it-yourself auto stuff. I get into enough accidents just walking down the sidewalk - If I tried to fix my own car, it would probably fall on my head, lol! :splat:

I drive a car that is fully covered under warranty for service and maintenance. Everything except tires. I recently had to replace them, and the dealership quoted me $450 per tire. I told them I found them for $300 each, so then they came down to $375. lol. So, there is always wiggle room.

I would say to them, "I'd love to have the work done here at the dealership because you do such great work and you know my car, but right now, the $300 is a little steep for me. I know (xyz) shop will do it cheaper - can you lower the price a bit?"

Don't get an oil change at the dealership. They cost way more. I highly recommend Wal-mart since they do it much cheaper. Not all oil changes are easy... I have to get all the way underneath my mustang to change the oil and get the car jacked up unlike most cars. Pain in the ass.

It's $29.00, that's not a dealbreaker for me. I just didn't know if I should omit getting the other things. I was concerned about the warranty being voided if something were to happen (something major).

Do you have to go to the dealer to get it done? How about checking around at other auto shops for pricing info. Dealerships will always charge much more. I remember when I needed my cabin air filter changed, they said it would cost 75.00 dollars. I had my son ehow to locate where the filter was located and change it. I bought the filter at the auto store for 20.00 dollars and had him put it in. 75.00 my fanny.

I just bought a car and I have a full warranty. Everything is covered! I recently had a routine diagnostic done on my engine, a intake gasket replaced, and my timing belt checked. While it was in the shop, I got a loaner car free of charge. I always insist on a great warranty when I buy a car, they always pay for themselves!

I have a 60K bumper-to-bumper warranty (most have only 36K), but it doesn't cover maintenance stuff.
