SicFounder
My friend is moving from Ohio to my area. She has a lot of larger stuff, like tables, dressers, chairs. I've found her a bed here, so we eliminated that. We looked at Uhaul and that's gonna cost about $1,200 MINIMUM and that's too much. Right now I'm looking for furniture in my area so she can just buy refurbished stuff, instead of shipping what she has, which can save a pretty penny. But in case we can't find all that she needs over here, what's a great way to move it all. Preferably in one trip. She has a pretty small car. Any ideas will be appreciated. Link to comment

SicFounder
okay, now this seemed pointless to post. But, we came up with an idea. Rent a truck, like a normal rental pickup which may not cost more than $50 a day with insurance. She drives here with as much as she can fit in the truck, then we both drive back and drop off the truck, get her car and if there's anything left, we'll hopefully get it in her car and then drive here. Again, pointless I posted, but we came up with the idea just a minute ago and after we decided to talk about it later. So I guess the question is... Will that work? Link to comment
SicFounder
Are you interested in this girl? Lol, no. She's 38 and like a mother to me. She just can't get a job out there and there's tons more here. Link to comment

At work we just got some sweet new TV's so they're practically begging us to take their old TV's home. I can take one off their hands for her sake. Link to comment
MasterPo
When I did what are you doing, I had a small truck so I picked a halfway spot and bought some storage space. As I had time I went back for what I needed. Probably not as great as doing it all in one shot but I brought out everything with me. Craigslist purchases are great but I live in an area where everybody charges retail for their junk so there was little to no savings or variety. Link to comment
abitbroken
I would do a one way truck rental, don't drive it back to her city. Also, if she doesn't have the funds to move, why is she moving? If she has to eliminate, I would say keep the furniture that is most important to you and personal stuff and sell the rest before moving. I am amazed as little as I have I have duplicates of measuring cups and such that I didn't even need and I got rid of a lot of stuff without getting rid of anything I needed. The other option is for her to have a yard sale then put the rest of her stuff in storage. Just pack the car with some personal items, pillow, important papers, a couple basic dishes and a pot and pan, clothing for this season and the next but only the stuff frequently worn plus a "good" outfit, and favorite things and then store the rest in a storage unit back where she lived until she gets established or figures she actually wants to stay. She could get a room for rent or roommate situation short term. Yikes. I am 38. I don't want to think about being a mother figure to a grown man. I feel old Link to comment
carbon14
How small is her car? She might be able to pull a small trailer-I think they're pretty cheap to rent. But having driven long distance with live stock trailers, I can say it's not the most fun experience in the world-I would think a smaller trailer wouldn't be an issue, but still a pain if you're not used to it. I think the best idea would be selling everything that she can and replacing it via Craiglists, Good Will shops, yard sells, etc... She can at least buy cheap furniture and then replace it as she gets on her feet. Link to comment
catfeeder
I'd try to sell anything and everything through yard or garage sales, especially the large stuff. I'd be super flexible with negotiating price--with the goal of fitting my remaining items in my car (possibly with a small trailer) and shipping the lighter stuff. I'd pay for that with the money I made from selling the stuff. It's only stuff. Link to comment
Ariel85
I think if you don't have the money for the move, and the stuff isn't really high end or things she can't live without (or heirloom), then dump the furniture and hit Ikea when she hits CO. If she's tight on money, I think her best bet is to load up her car, ship the rest of her stuff ground via UPS, and sell all the furniture. Link to comment
SicFounder
There isn't an IKEA for hundreds of miles, nor an interstate. We got a pretty good plan now. Link to comment
Ariel85
There isn't an IKEA for hundreds of miles, nor an interstate. We got a pretty good plan now. They deliver. lol Don't forget that renting a truck from the major companies doesn't often include unlimited mileage - they charge quite a bit per mile, in addition to a daily gee. Those trucks also aren't exactly mileage efficient. I think when you're all said and done, it's going to cost a lot more than the $100 you're anticipating. Link to comment
SicFounder
We know it's going to be a few hundred either way. As long as it's not a few thousand. So far we've established that we're going to take no furniture. Since we can easily replace it. The hotel I work at has TONS of old furniture that they're going to be throwing out anyway so I'm gonna ask them to hold me a few stuff until we can get it out. Link to comment
Ariel85
That makes more sense. I still think it would be cheaper to send her belongings that don't fit in the car via UPS. One of my coast to coast moves was like that. I had a whole house full of furniture that I sold/donated, and then just boxed up my clothes and kitchen stuff and shipped it via ground. Cost me very little. Link to comment
