peaceOfmind78 Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I am currently questioning my purpose of existence. Is this normal? Shall I just be really thinking and focusing on what I'll be doing tomorrow besides waking up, getting up, getting ready for work (M-F), etc.? What I'll be having for breakfast, lunch, dinner? I feel stuck. Confused. And meaningless.

No Words Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 you aren't going to find a rhetorical solution to that question... a metaphysical one, perhaps, if you decide to focus on what is most important to you, in.. as contradictory as it may sound... a selfless context... working & being able to care for yourself leaves you at least *some* time... if you do the 9-5 & just suck up food like a plant.. well... then you give to your masters what they deem your meaning is for... but if you *use* your situation as a resource to involve yourself with what is closest to your beng... well.. then you are *their* master, and all you are doing is fighting what forces you to be less than what you would be, were freedom something you could hold more perfectly... peace, & love, john
alli Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Yeah I wonder about that whole "meaning of life" thing on a regular basis, too. I don't think it's all about one person but instead as people as a collective group and where the future is going. I think about it but don't really see it as my place to change the world, so I figured my best option is to just enjoy my life. I'm working on getting there. When it all comes down to it- pain, suffering, happiness, fear, all the other feelings- it's all just chemical synapses in your brain anyway. I'm probably not helping.

You can create your own purpose if you want and live life on your own terms but that's up to you.
Gemo112 Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 You have to live life first to know whether or not it's worth living. Living but being conscious of the fact we eventually die does not make living pointless because you have to live to decide whether your life was pointless or not in the end. Life is too short to worry about these things. Might as well enjoy yourself while you can!
peaceOfmind78 Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 I don't know what else to say...but I agree with most of you. Thank YOU.
gingerlemon Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Here's my take: There is no philosophical or religious or any other theoretically founded answer to the meaning of life. We simply don't/ can't know. So the best we can do is to live as fully as we can in the here and now, with integrity.
halved Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 What is the meaning of life? I know the answer to this one. Hahaha. I tend to side with Aristotle who says that human beings are political animals. I take this to mean that humans are meant to live amongst and be productive within a community. Everyone has a role which they can potentially live up to. Not everyone will be the leader, the medicine man, the lawyer, the artist, the warrior, the farmer, the teacher or the priest. Few will be influential, most will be followers. As humans we have evolved this way in order to survive. We are highly intelligent pack animals. Happiness is defined by whether we have actualized our individual potentialities. In other words, if we have become who we are meant to become. Everyone's definition of happiness will be different, since we are all different. We are not all meant to become the same thing. Beyond this, there is no "meaning" of life IMO as defined by the various cults and religious groups.

Rangafro Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 It's such a fundamental aspect of humanity to want a meaningful life, it comes with being sapient and self-conscious. We want a reason to get out of bed every day, something to work towards, something to provide a basis for our values and something to give us solace in times of despair. What are we but robots or animals if we don't have meaning? Personally I believe link removed; that is to say no meaning exists other than the meaning that you assign to it. I also believe the meaning we give to our lives is also meaningless in itself, which goes a bit beyond that and leans more towards nihilistic thinking. Is it possible to attain "happiness" living a meaningless life? I don't know, but if happiness is only built on satiating this instinct with self-deception then in actuality we are no better than robots or animals and I want no part of it.
