metrogirl
Well just because your friend paid for it doesn't mean you have to keep it in. If it's bothering you and causing much pain, then you should probably take it out anyway. Are you taking all the right steps to keep it clean? Link to comment
guynextdoor
Tongue rings.. it could do some serious damage to your teeth. Think about it in the long run. Link to comment
happyfrank
Takes 2 to 4 weeks to heal. One of my friends got it done. Link to comment
MyNinja
I never had a tongue piercing, but I heard that it goes through stages of healing. I heard there was supposed to be some swelling, pain of course, and your diet will have will change temporarily until it heals thoroughly. How much pain and how much swelling, that I'm not sure of. I know of some people who got it done and ate whatever they want and didn't have much pain and swelling and others who had infections and whatnot. It could all depend on who pierced you and the technique they used. Talk to the person who did the procedure and ask them what is normal and what you can do to get some comfort Link to comment

Did they give you throrough aftercare instructions and suggest anything you could take over the counter for pain? I don't have experience with tongue piercings but I found these online, and one site suggests ibuprofen is the best medication since it treats pain and swelling: link removed link removed Can you make and drink shakes? If you so you might want to try making a protein shake with peanut butter in it (assuming no peanut allergies) because it is very filling or stock up on some meal replacement shakes like Ensure to keep you full until you can eat more. InkkedBree
Took me a week. It's always best to research everything of what piercing before you get one, keep that in mind for next time if you do for another. Link to comment
mrwebcam
I have mine done and it took a good 2 weeks. You gotta be tough and get through the pain. What i did was put small pieces of food in the inside of my cheek and slowly chew. Take a lot of asprin. The swelling will go down in a few days. Link to comment
metrogirl
You should be using Glyoxide directly on the piercing to prevent infections as well as rinsing your mouth after everything you eat with Listerine. Link to comment
sweetooth
I agree with guynextdoor, they can definitely cause gum erosion in the long run. If you keep it, I'd say keep it no longer than a year. I finally took mine out after 3 years because it was causing some damage and not worth it. Link to comment
misssmithviii
I've had mine for 4 years now and never had a problem with it. I even have what's called a door-knocker - and it looks like it. I feel nearly naked without it since I've had it for so long. I have no gum erosion, no chipped teeth although I spin it around when I'm focusing >. When I first got it - I went to school and had to eat a burrito. You know what I did? Ate the burrito like I had no tongue ring. I had to train my tongue to NOT move too much in my mouth and while I eat, only do vertical movements with ever so slight sideways movements - years later it's second nature to me and I don't have to think about it. You can eat anything honey. If it's that difficult for you then take it out. You have no obligation to keep it just because you didn't pay for it. By the way - do you still have the long training bar? Because I broke protocol and replaced it with a the normal-sized, smaller-length bar (took ibuprofen and I surprisingly didn't swell much at all). Some people think I can't eat with the door knocker but it's perfectly fine, really. That's me in high school right after I got it ^_^ Boy did I have terrible skin back then >. Link to comment
tresqua
I can't help but wonder if people are actually surprised when the experience complications including pain and infection when they have holes drilled in various parts of their bodies especially mucous membranes in and around body parts filled with soft sensitive tissues and bacteria all around during a procedure done just about anywhere by non medical personnal. Why not just say to a random stranger, "Here's a gun, shoot me in the head I think a hole would look great next to my ear" Link to comment
