Cynder
Question is pretty self explanatory. This is for a Graphic Design job. Interview is tomorrow. Most of these clothes have been sitting in a drawer or hanging in my closet untouched for over a year. That's how long it's been since I've had to dress business casual for anything. I know the pics are horrid. I had to use my phone. Sorry they aren't better... Really basic... black cordoroy pants and black knit top. Blue floral shirt, brown cords. Purple cami, black blowse, black cords. Navy blue a-line tunic shirt, brown chords. AND, I have a black knee length lacey skirt that I could wear with a black knit top. I didn't get a pic of that though. The interview is tomorrow. I don't have the money or the time to go out and buy something. I have an excellent fashion sense when it comes to going out dancing at the Goth club or going to the metal bar to see a band play. Everywhere else my fashion sense sucks. I'm a jeans and T kinda girl. So, help... please?
InvisibleWound
Hmm, I'd go with what outfit in the first pic or last pic... Whatever looks the most professional. I can't buy anything either I wear the same thing to all interviews, a blue shirt, sweather/blousy type thing and black pinstripe pants, thats all I got until i get the dough rolling... Daligal83
I would go with the skirt. Do you have a suit jacket at all? Cords aren't very professional to wear to an interview. I always wear a suit with black dress pants, but work with what you have.
Anonymous122
First, I like your cat. Second, the first picture looks most professional.

I put the toilent seat down because when I was taking those pics she kept drinking out of the toilet. Thanks for replying.

There are definitely people who don't know that it's best to wear a suit and I don't know you, so just put it out there. Well sorry, but I just spent two hours going through all my clothes and it's disheartening hearing that the best things I can come up with are unprofessional. It's all I have. I haven't been solidly employed for over a year. I have less than $100 in my bank account to live on until I find another job. There is no fairy godmother that will show up and bring me fantastic clothes to wear. This is it. It's either cords or jeans. And jeans aren't an option for obvious reasons. Daligal83
It wasn't meant to be disheartening. It was advice. I wasn't there with you to know you went through your closet for two hours. I'm just on the other side of a computer. Also, the first thing I suggested was to go with the skirt. Guess you didn't see that though.

Yes, I saw that... but I don't know if the skirt is a good idea. A black lace skirt isn't exactly professional either. Yes, it's long enough to be acceptable, but it's a little too Goth in my opinion. I figured that would work as a last resort if I couldn't find anything that worked with pants. That's why I didn't bother taking a pic of it. This is the bible belt... anything remotely Goth-ish gets people thinking you're a "devil worshiper." I've experienced this since my teen years and I'm 32 now. So, you can imagine. And of course I don't expect you to be a mind reader and know that I spent two hours going through my clothes. But I would think people seeing this thread would have the common sense to know that this is the best I have to wear. IF I had better clothes, I would be posting pics of those. lucasky
If anything remotely goth-ish gets you labled as a "devil-worshiper" I would stay away from a black shirt on black pants combo. I find it is typically servers that sport that look anyways. That being said, black is sleek and when I think web design I think sleek and something that sells. On the other hand, if you're applying for an office job at a more well-to-do place, I would wear the purple camy as part of your clothing combination. It brings colour to your outfit, which seems more office like. I don't know if you have these where you live, but in Canada we have stores called "value village". They're second hand stores where clothing items are sold for only a few dollars. I buy a lot of my work clothes there. I just got a really nice used dress for $3. People at my work ask me where I got it all the time, and I proudly said I got it at Value Village (yesss savings)! The job I have pays well (and is with a great company too), but when I applied for it I was broke - I had just finished school and was loaded with debt. I did not have office clothes so I borrowed an outfit from my MOM! I'm really slender and she's in her early 50's and has put on some weight. I had to safety pin my skirt on! How embarrassing... but it worked. They key was confidence I think. These are all just ideas. Second hand, borrowing clothes for a day, playing with ideas. Do what you've gotta do! Good luck with the interview. Remember confidence!
OfTheStars
Is the black blouse long sleeve? it looks like it is. I think you should wear that out fit, with the blouse mostly done up, so that you can still see the purple cami. As it is for a design job, the expectations of how you will dress will be less strict that if you were interviewing for a banking job or something. Good luck! I'm sure so long as you are polite and confident that will make more of an impression that how ever you dress. when I interviewed for my present job I was wearing heels, and one fell off while I was being shown up the stairs and I fell flat on my face in front of the boss! lucky i still got the job. Seraphim
That is a good idea! I have borrowed clothing before from my mother too for a job interview. A navy suit and it worked! Remember to smile too! Here is hoping you get the job!
MollyElise
I like the black pants, black shirt & purple cami. I think having the layers makes it look more professional & put together.
Cynder
My Mom wears a size four and I wear a size 16. Ain't gonna happen. Most of my friends are guys... my only female friend does not dress up. She doesn't have anything that would work. Of borrowing clothes were an option I would have done it. We do have second hand stores here. But (and I was really trying to avoid Gounod here in this thread since it always opens up a whole other door.) But the nearest second hand store is 4 miles away. And... I have no driver's license. It's a medical reason not a criminal reason. Forgive me for being testy, but I just don't understand why no one can understand that what I posted are all the options I have. That and my black skirt outfit which I'm thinking of trying on with a black blows and a purple scarf just to see how it looks. The purple scarf might take away some of the "I'm so dark" feeling. Ofthestars, yes, that black blows is long sleeved. Right now that's the outfit I'm leaning toward. I'll see how the skirt looks with the black shirt nd the scarf. abitbroken
Always dress better than the job calls for when going on an interview, then check out what other people are wearing to determine your work clothes. If the work environment calls for jeans or work clothes (like on a farm or labor), wear khakis or wear jeans and a nicer shirt. If the dress code is business casual, wear a suit (can be with pants instead of a skirt if it matches and looks professional) or a dress. If it is above that, where a suit that has a matching skirt. Every place has a different idea of what business casual means. When I worked at a business casual place, it was merely that we could wear pants with our suits instead of skirts (real casual, right?) . Don't think about matching the code, but going just a notch above and looking pulled together.
Circe
I would go with the black lace skirt, black blouse, and purple scarf. a) I don't think cords are a good idea because they are casual clothing; and b) I was always told to wear a skirt to an interview (being a woman). I never did because I preferred pant suits - but that was considered to be a bit of a 'rule' around here.

Forgive me for being a bit critical here - but it is very possible your potential employer will be thinking the same thing as posters here. Best here it before the interview and go in prepared, no? abitbroken
Black on black isn't "goth" if the pieces are business attire-like. Do you have any colorful scarves (silk/rayon, etc) that would draw attention to your face? Some people can carry off a head to toe black look but it all has to be very tailored, etc., otherwise one looks drab, looks like one is wearing a uniform, or looks like they are going to a funeral. What about a nice cardigan that has a good color and is of a dressy weight material? Be careful with the black lacey skirt. If it looks too much of what you would wear to a club or too sexy rather than innocent, it could send the wrong message, especially if it doesn't fit you well. You would have to really really pull it off with accessories to be able to wear that. If it is a very professional cut but just has lace detail - then maybe. I know that its all you have - but what about visiting a consignment shop to pick up another piece to give you some options - i found a very expensive and really striking suit at one for short money. You could easily and cheaply find a pair of lined dress slacks. I would wear the blue top with a simple skirt OR if you can find a nice pair of lined dress slacks at consignment and then pull it together with a nice pair of shoes and some accessories. (nice doesn't have to be expensive.) If you give yourself a budget of $20 you are sure to find SOMETHING to pull what you have together even if it is just one piece - and you'll be able to get a higher end piece for discount store money. Even if you find a top that has sort of a wrap front to it - it might flatter your shape and would make a more casual pair of pants dressier if you are wearing a good cut for you. I would invest a little more money and buy yourself an interview outfit, IMHO if you plan to be on a bunch of interviews. Anyway, I am not criticizing your wardrobe - I just have interviewed people and know when you don't even notice what they are wearing because you notice the whole person or say "hmm...she seems professional or has her act together" then you did a good job. If something does not look right on you, etc, it sticks out more. You could definitely wear some of this stuff day to day for working but you want to put your best foot forward on an interview. I just think with the right accessories and maybe one other piece it would do it. I know graphic design can be pretty solitary, but if they think you can meetwith clients, etc, all the better. Cynder
The skirt... You can't see the purple scarf in this picture that well, but it's there. Boy... after taking that picture I set the scarf on the back of my couch, it fell back behind and when I tried to pull it out it got caught on a nail. so I had to move the damn couch to get it without ripping it. In doing this I hurt my hand. Then I figured I would try to panty hose on and the shoes I'm planning to wear so I can really see what the outfit will look like. I went through the bag of items I bought at the store, and the pantyhose aren't even in there. I paid for them, they're on the receipt, but they were never put in my bag. So... now I get to walk back to the store in the freezing snow to get more. Boy I hope none of this is an omen. My hand is killing me and I just want to relax... Best here it before the interview and go in prepared, no? I get what you are saying but people here aren't understanding that this is all I have available. If I had better clothes, I would wear better clothes. If there were people I could borrow from, I would. If I could o to a secondhand store, I would. People are giving me all these suggestions that aren't possible at the moment. So, it's not that I don't want to be prepared... this is as prepared as I can be. So... criticize all you want. It is what it is. These are the clothes I have.
SapphireNoir10
I think the layered look will be fine. I usually go for a black skirt/nice shirt black cardi combo. Good luck with your interview, none of the outfits look bad, Im sure you'll shine whatever you wear.
Cynder
I don't have time to go to a consignment shop. It's 9pm here and any place like that that exists in my town is closed. I know black on black isn't Goth necessarily. My black skirt can be though, depending on what is warn with it.
