adequate
I have been working at my company for 4.5 years and I am number 2 in seniority out of 12 people. I have been working the night hours since I have been working there. A lot of people have left the company whether it be they posted out for another dept or got fired liked this one woman last week. She worked days and I have wanted to work days for a long time. I asked my supervisors if they were going to fill her shift and they said yes. I expressed my interest in it and they said they understand and would consider me but they need me to work at night because I will be the only trainer at night now because a lot of other people that left were also trainers and we are in the process of hiring new people and they need me. A lot of the people that work part time at night are too new to be able to do these things as well. So the day slot will go to this one person who has been there 1.5 years. I am LIVID. But in this economy I really should not complain about it too much and there is nothing they will do about it anyway. I just needed to vent this. Thank you all for listening! Link to comment
Binoo
It`s no wonder morale is so low in so many places. I used to work at a coffee shop. I was there the day it opened and I was employed there almost twice as long as anyone else. I never called in sick. I did the baking, the cash, the cleaning, the banking, e-mails and any contact with upper management, the handy-work. EVERYTHING. Infact, pretty much all my regulars thought I was the manager because of all the work I did and sometimes I would be there for 16 hours straight because one of the girls that worked there would always call in sick at the last minute before my shift ended. Some days, she wouldn`t show up. One time she disappeared for almost a week and then came in a week later and still had her job waiting for her. And when the time came for a supervisor promotion, guess who got it? She did! Link to comment
adequate
OMG Binoo! For you could it have been politics? I bet there are a ton of stories like these and it is unfortunate. I am not going to state my anger at work but it is great I can let it out here. Link to comment

She told me the reason she gave the other girl the position and raise was to try to get her to `straighten up`, meaning, she thought giving her more money and more authority would make her more interested in doing her job. Of course, it didn`t. Nothing changed. Infact, it got worse because she took no responsibility for her new position. There were a million things wrong with that company. That`s not even the worst of it. Link to comment

Unfortunately, there is a message in both this story and the OP's story, which is that business management is not altruistic, and often not forward-thinking. If you're doing a good job, that's where they want to keep you. Promotions are only given out for a reason, such as to fix a bad employee, do a favour for a colleague, or fill some sort of quota. They're much less commonly given as a reward for good service, contrary to what most people expect or believe. You have to be similarly ruthless in your dealings with employers; next time a position will come up, say with as much force as required to be taken seriously, that you will find it impossible to stay if someone more junior and clearly less suitable is promoted ahead of you, because you will take it as a clear indication of a lack of faith in your performance despite your excellent record. Make it in their interests to promote you in order to keep you. Link to comment
