New Position Dilema

Recommended Posts

I've been working at my new position for about 2 months at a Doctors office. I love the work and the doctors are great. I'm very task driven have made good enhancements to current procedures and processes.

During the interview process I told the manager that I did not have much clinical experience but, did have an extensive amount of office experience. She never mentioned that this position had the potential to become clinical supervisor. I wasn't looking for a supervisory position/clinical supervisor because I don't want to have the hassle or stress to deal with each day. My previous job was very stressful and it affected my health in so many ways.

Now for the issues. It's a small office with 2 assistants including myself. We have a receptionist who is very verbally combative who has been nothing but a headache.. Our Manager is very frustrated with her. Her attitude towards patients is rude, money has gone missing, and she has broken several HIPPA violations. YET, she is still employed there. The person who I replaced advised me that I needed to stand my ground to the receptionist OR otherwise she would make my life a misery. Our Manager moans to us about her constantly but yet nothing has been done. Now, my manager wants me to take the role of a clinic supervisor because she does not want to deal with the receptionist, Clinic or Front office. In her words she wants to "Be left alone and do the billing and have people leave her alone".

Firstly, I'm a peace maker, a caring individual who looks out for other peoples needs and does not like confrontation or conflict. I know I'm going to find this task difficult. My manager has told me that I need to keep "bucking her off me". BUT, it seems as though she's bucking her off on me. The receptionist manipulates, and lies and has been caught out on many occasions and in various situations. Our Nurse Practioner has even told me that she doesn't know what to do to help her anymore.

Yesterday, my manager asked me if I had ever fired someone before. I replied "No, do I need to?". I'm guessing this was a test to find out my weaknesses. They have now decided to cross train the receptionist to do back office support. Guess who will be the one to train her? I love to help people out but I fear that during training she will be overwhelming and overpowering.

I doubt if there will be an increase in salary. The pay is not very good but its a building block for me to move on to other opportunities that may arise.

Thoughts?

Also, if I feel like people are getting frustrated or look sad I feel like its my job to cheer them up and keep the peace. My boss was looking so stressed so yesterday I asked her if she was doing ok, because I was worried that she looked so stressed out and I hate to see people that way. She told me that she was ok and I worry too much?

I don't have much advice for you- but I understand what you're going through. We have a very similar problem at my office right now, and its quite frustrating.

The problem is when there is a bad employee and management won't take action, it creates a lot of stress on the employees who are forced to keep working with that person.

Your absolutely right. I feel like she undermines and contaminates the workplace. It's like poison ivy that gets under your skin. I guess management won't terminate her employment because they would be held accountable.

The other concern I have is that the receptionist told me that she was forced to leave her last job because her husbands ex wife stole money from the company. She also told me when I first started the position that the incident at her other workplace may require her to be appear in court. I have never mentioned this to my manager but with the money going missing in the office a few weeks ago I really don't know how to handle this.

Take the upgrade. Let your manager know how pleased you are with the opportunity to learn some management techniques, even the difficult ones. Then fire the receptionist and hire a competent and honest one.

You'll feel much better, and in the end your boss may well be grateful*!

Besides, career building blocks are good things!

Light and laughter,
