im_the_undead
and racism. I'm soo tired of racism. I swear, someone says a racist term or comment in my presence no less than twice a day... there have been times where derogatory terms have been shouted out to me AT SCHOOL. really? i thought we were over that! I don't understand why people don't keep certain comments to themselves.. this whole Arizona issue is being used as an excuse to demonstrate and shout out hateful, ignorant words and conversations and i'm starting to believe that the majority of people in the United States [NOT ALL] have no sense of reasoning or REALITY. [REALITY IS, all countries have illegal immigrants......all countries have issues, but not ALL COUNTRIES are as LARGE AS THE UNITED STATES or have as much room & even though they're jam packed with people, they don't make crazy laws o.o] why is it okay for a black guy to call me a wet back or a beaner but not okay for me to call him a jigaboo? or a white guy to shout out in class "hell yeahh send the damn beaners back!" without being told to hush? it hurts my feelings, sometimes i just hate being alive because i know someone will bully the hell out of me either the next day, or next week for being hispanic o.0 I don't get it, not everyone is illegal and even if someone is that doesn't JUSTIFY racism or harassment. yeah, i've been harrassed for being hispanic, plenty of times! And i'm not even mexican, or even look hispanic or have an accent....i don't get it. idk how to deal with this; i can't enlighten everyone with truths they don't know of.. help Link to comment
Mauxly
I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this. And I'm so sorry that my state is involved. For the record, not everyone from AZ are racist lunatics, and many of us are fighting this thing with everything we have. You should see the protests in my town. Our city council has rebelled against SB1070. So you should know that there are more non-racists who aren't laying down for this. Anyway, I believe that racism stems from insecurity. People who have little to offer this world and know it tend to put down anyone they can. Degrading someone based on skin color/nationality is the lowest common denominator. Pay attention, you don't see a lot of college educated/well adjusted white supremists do you? They are mostly Pabst drinking trailer trash with no education/no future. I feel sorry for them. Unfortunately, most of the votes for AZ legislature come from Maricopa County and some surrounding communities where education standards are horrible and quality of life is rapidly declining. Uneducated people blame the lack of quality on their neighbors instead of the real demon, lack of decent formal education. So whatever you do, don't buy into the hate. Just don't do it. It isn't about you (you know this) and of course it has nothing to do with your worth. Most people aren't like this. It's just that the ones that are, are more vocal, more noticeable. Link to comment
sidehop
Those are the type of people that will never gain any respect. I'm sure if they are ganging up on you as a group none of them have the guts to confront you or say something degrading as an individual. People that are judgmental don't understand nor try to learn about an individual, group of people, cultures and the differences that they can't comprehend. Whether's that's just not taught by their parents, trying to belong to such idiotic group of individuals, or believe that they have some sort of power over another to make themselves feel good. In that sense they are nothing but cowards. I'd leave 'em alone. Roll your eyes, laugh it off. The last thing you want to do is keep fueling the negativity. Link to comment
greywolf
I think part of the problem nowadays is that it is shoved down people's throats that we can't be racist or say racist things. It is human nature to rebel. Link to comment

It is human nature to rebel. I don't think that is the problem at all. I'm about as un-PC as you get, and can't stand the PC police. But if we tolerate hate that can rapidly turn into fostering hate, which if embraced by a population for whatever reason can turn into genocide/human rights atrocity. Just review history. Review all of the genocides. They started out with poor economic conditions and people starting to whisper…”It’s all THEIR fault, those guys over there, the ones with the different accent, funny noses, different skin color…” USA and Canada are free speech countries and I appreciate that. People should be able to freely speak their minds even if what they speak is abhorable to me. I think it is important that popular culture continue shun/shame racism. Otherwise we'll have a major shytstorm on our hands. Link to comment
Mimori
The way people are raised and the experiences they’re given are practically a starting root of our personalities, that includes racial/prejudices/etc. But on the same note, whites are even victim of racism-especially in classroom/public settings. Taking into fact that if you disagree (no matter how much reasoning and details you use to back up your opinion) with a black politician, the most common “comeback” is basically the fact that your racist for thinking poorly of them. In today’s most common setting, I believe that racism has almost become a comedic gesture, and with the lack of respect in my age group towards other, people feel that they have the right to be open-minded, and that freedom of speech protects them from people who disagree with racial commentary. I personally hold no ill will towards any race- of course there are stereotypes (and for the most part I tend to try and avoid them). You can’t teach someone whose been brought up thinking in one direction (That blacks/whites/etc are a certain thing [inter stereotype]) I’ve personally been raised in a very diverse setting, although my experience with other races is not always on the positive side, not every single person is the same. Stereotypes usually derive from a person’s experience with a group of people, and thus they flourish because of these groups we’ve set. Example: Think about high school and how the Nerds, Emos, etc are all grouped into different categories and until you learn to overlook their appearance and differences, you won’t be able to see how similar you are (and even sometimes how different). Although, I don’t believe that people realize how tiring it is, year after year, to be fed the same complaints from a specific group. In my opinion, I believe that most people are “over” the appeal of trying to continue with the lessons schools shove down your throats. (Example: Most children in the DARE class-which is used to prevent alcohol and drug usage, actually ended up motivating us to do so just because they refused to stop shoving it down our throats and telling us how bad it is… Thus, as children, we were motivated to do the opposite to practically test our boundaries, or even experience it ourselves instead of how someone else described it to us). It’s very hard to direct a person into a particular thinking pattern, especially after being influenced either too heavily, or too little in certain areas. But I doubt that ever, racism will cease to exist. It seems to common that we “group” each other into categories, and it’s impossible for that not to happen. –Think about class systems, political and financial status… We’re all categorized in some way and thus I don’t see a future of their ever being a time when “we all just get along” with one another and see each other for the unique individuals of society. Hope that made since, I don’t have time to read over it (I’m at work lol) Link to comment
im_the_undead
thank most of y'all for being understanding..it's releaving to know someone out there has compassion & reasoning. [though i understand, if we were all in a room with our own race..some form of segragation will then occur, just because that's how it is] i'm just sad because my teacher didn't defend me when this white boy said stuff to me, he actually lectured me on what he believes immigration is about and how immigrants just walk all over the laws. my prior favorite teacher no longer holds that spot. i'm also afraid now because my sister is dating a really SUPER conservative cop/college student/ex military guy....and well, george bush spoke to him and he has a very.....narrow minded way of thinking.... i just don't think he's accpeting enough to be in my family but my sister loves hiim so i'm supposed to just bite my tongue while ignorance sometimes spues from his mouth. i know he's a lot older than i am, but he's def. not wiser. & i don't want to be hateful toward white people....but since i've had so many harsh experiences i can't help but have my guard WAAAAAAY up when i'm surrounded by a whole bunch Link to comment
Mauxly
I just realized that I've been stereotyping white supremists (i.e. trailer trash, uneducated). Hating on the haters right? There has to be a better way. Sigh... Not sure what it is. I understand that racism/stereotypes are not about to go away anytime soon. And I agree that they are largely due to how people are raised. I do think that folks who find racism to be evil/destructive to communities need to shout it from the rooftops. That way that 5-15 year old impressionable kid who's been subjected to his families racist blather his whole life will at least hear a different perspective. It shouldn’t just go unchecked. greywolf
Oh really.... Is that what racism is? Rebellion? LOL No of course not. But I have read study that showed that when children of different ethnicities were put in a multicultural education class, children ended up segregating into their ethnic groups instead of mixing. Why? Because it made them feel more different from each other rather than similar. If you're made to feel like you need to be PC about everything, it can start bringing up a lot of resentment. Unfortunately, the resentment is misplaced because it's not a certain ethnicities fault that you can't say certain things. And the saddest part is that I have rarely seen a white person making racist comments. IMO it's usually people of minority groups that make comments like that. Link to comment

Sure, I have many other asian friends but just as many people from other race and culture. Cultural influence I do believe though have a lot to do with how a person sees others. And it doesn't need to happen during a childhood, many people who were in the military experience this sort of eye opener about the world outside and change their mind. In that sense undead, I do feel bad for these people who cannot see the person only by color of the skin and their race/ethnicity. It's sad really but sometimes there isn't much you can do without them wanting to be educated. Link to comment
im_the_undead
honestly, i never knew there were other races as a kid..... i thought we were all one. i didn't even know i was hispanic, or what that even meant. only thing i knew was that some people spoke chinese and spanish...and others only english, ect. yet i didn't know that people weren't equal until one day someone MADE ME know i was less. my 5th grade teacher, thanks for almost making me hate immigrants.. apparently we're the worst people on the face of the earth, didn't know that before her. i thought we were good people, kind, caring, silly...church goers & tax payers. guess that's not enough. i was so close to being brainwashed, wouldn't be surprised if anyone in that class actually stayed brainwashed. adults are really influential to kids.. we need to be careful with the things we say Link to comment

I believe it's because in that class, they were trying to teach all the students to get along and be more understanding of each other's cultures, and they would describe scenarios that different cultures had to face. In your situation, getting along wasn't shoved down your throat, and you weren't reminded of your differences. Link to comment
Lamour detruit
Racism is everywhere. Not just towards black people, but also *towards* white people. Unfortunately there will always be a certain amount of people that holds such views no matter where you are, no matter what race you are. Just the way this world is. Link to comment
Hermes
WEll, yes, ITU, I know there are some Hispanic people who are black, but it is not a feature of being Hispanic. If we can be programmed to think less of ourselves, doesn’t it stand to reason we can be programmed to think less of others? I believe that’s all racism really is, being programmed to believe that “different means worse”. link removed H Link to comment
