Burning and Urination

Recommended Posts

I was inspired to post this by the other peeing problem thread a few days ago, haha.

I'm a female in my early twenties, and I've been experiencing a strong burning sensation in the vulvar area after urination for the past two years. I've made many visits to the doctor during this time and been tested for UTI, yeast, BV, trich, chlamydia and gonorrhea, all of which have come back negative. Also, during the pelvic exam I was told that everything looks normal.

There's only one thing I've found to relieve my symptoms, and that is to drink a lot of water. For example, immediately after I go to the bathroom first thing in the morning I need to drink a full 591 mL/20 oz bottle of water to avoid feeling any burning. With each successive urination during the day I can usually cut that amount down to half or even a quarter by nighttime when my urine is fairly clear. Although I'm happy to have found a way to prevent the burning, the problem is that I absolutely *cannot* go to the bathroom without drinking good amount of water immediately afterwards.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? My doctor(s) have absolutely NO idea what is going on, or why drinking water would alleviate my symptoms like that. This is also quite annoying for me, especially if I'm out somewhere and have to go to the bathroom but don't have any water with me.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have a close friend who has been having problems for the past 5 years. I use to have the same problem, in fact! In my friend's case... no one has been able to figure out what her problem is, sadly.

For me, I stopped using mint toothpaste and tried some homeopathic medicine (I think it was called Cantharis? You can get it at Whole Foods. It's just little tiny white pellets that taste sweet).

This really makes me want to become a specialist in this stuff 'cause I hate that you and my friend are suffering and no one has no idea why.

Good Luck!

Have you seeked a 2nd opinion? Or 3rd? Or 4th? Sometimes doctors need a little 'push'. They like to sweep things under the rug when tests come back normal. Truth is, they need to look harder. If I were you, I'd be insistant and keep going until they found out what was wrong.

Something similar happened to my sister (not about peeing). She was ill. For months and months. Tests were coming back normal. They told her it was 'in her head'. Specialists - everything... It was her son's pediatrician who diagnosed her (she was complaining randomly while visiting). He called his friend/colleague who ran his OWN tests. It was Crohn's disease. She's since had operation after operation... that diagnosis saved her life!

Pain while peeing isn't normal. You shouldn't settle for that diagnosis.

I'm glad to hear you were able to find a solution to your problem! I've never looked into homeopathy before, but I just might give it a shot if my condition continues on like this. Thanks for the advice, and I hope your friend can find a solution that works for her too.

I have sought a second opinion, yes (and will most likely be going for a third, fourth, etc. until someone can figure this out). I agree with you that doctors do need a little push sometimes. The problem I find is finding a doctor who will actually take the time to really listen to you and help you figure out the problem, rather than sending you quickly out the door with some arbitrary prescription (in the past two years, for example, I've been prescribed antibiotics three times for infections that it turns out I never actually had in the first place). In the meantime I'll be looking for another doctor to see if he/she is a better match for me. I can only wonder how many times I'm gonna have to pee in a cup before I finally get some answers, haha.

Even though it was a pain getting there, I'm happy to hear that your sister was finally able to find out what was wrong and get the treatment she needed. I hope she's doing much better now! Also, thank you for your advice; it has inspired me to keep at it until I figure this out.
