Over-the-counter treatments for Hyperhidrosis?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I haven't gone to my doctor about this because I've been going a lot the last 2-3 months for depression. I don't want to sound like I have all these issues so I haven't actually talked to him about my hyperhidrosis.

I've always had the problem, but just lived with it. It is getting so bad now that I am unable to do my daily routines and work. I work in a health care facility which involves putting on latex gloves, and it is rather difficult when I have sweaty hands. And there are obviously about 100 different embarrassing scenarios I could tell such as shaking hands or trying to hit on a girl but the sweat is too bad.

My hyperhidrosis mainly affects my feet and hands (entire hand including the palm and even goes to the top of my hand around my fingernails). I also get occasional hot flashes like 4-5 times a day maybe more depending on the day. They are short like one minute flashes, and I've mentioned it one time to my doctor and he jokingly asked me if I was going through "menopause." I didn't take it personally, but he thought it was just associated with anxiety.

So before I go make a formal appointment for this, I know my doctor is going to tell me to try an over-the-counter medication. I've looked randomly while at Wal-Mart and didn't see anything except antiperspirant deodorants. What medications work specifically for hyperhidrosis and what stores hold them?

I know people who say those deodorants work but other than that i've never been able to find over the counter stuff for that. there is a medication called drysol that i know of someone who ordered it offline (but i'm not sure how legal that was, but you could try to find it) i personally take pills for it because the drysol didn't help, they're prescription, but it's really the best thing i've ever done... i needed it really bad.

I don't understand how a deodorant is going to help me though. I wash my hands at least 5-6 times a day when I'm not at work. When I'm at work they get washed like every 5-10 minutes. I have heard of lotions which are over-the-counter but the mentioning was too vague to catch a name of the medication.

What prescription do you take? Just wondering in case the over-the-counter medications don't work. Do you have it as bad I do and in the same areas? Most people only have sweaty palms but it's my fingers and feet too. Not to mention the random hot flashes which are embarrassing because people think I just went tanning when my body turns red all of a sudden.

Edit: How reduced was your sweating? Just curious
