Deciding where to go in life - How??

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I want to discuss life and careers.

I am 22, and for about 15 years I have wanted to do web & graphics design. I started out with a year of university, but deferred.

To be honest, I found my motivation for digital work to be severely lacking (even though I was top of the class), but I absolutely fell in love with traditional mediums (drawing, painting, etc.), even though I sucked!

So, I defferred, thinking I'd take a year to re-coup & think about what I really want to do.

6 months later, I still would love to do design, I have goals to work for publishing companies, small design studios, record labels, and, eventually, freelance. I hope to accomplish all of this over the next 8 years. It's not a matter of connections (I have lots), or having a great portfolio, it's mostly that I doubt my own skills, and lack the motivation to complete uni. But, I know once I complete uni, and focus/work hard, I will have the skills, and I will be proud.

So, I plan to go back to uni start of 2011 to finish my degree & start my career.

I just want to know a few things from whoever reads this:

- How did you work out what you wanted to do career/life-wise?

- Did you have doubts at the start (say, during uni)?

- Did you ever change your mind?

- If you have begun your "career", is this what you saw yourself doing/wanted in your 20's?

Thanks (:

I just want to know a few things from whoever reads this:

- How did you work out what you wanted to do career/life-wise? trial and error. I've been doing what I found I like and do best for ten years and Im still questioning it. always questioning if I did or am doing the right thing.

- Did you have doubts at the start (say, during uni)? lots of doubt, especially in school.

- Did you ever change your mind?I've attempted to change careers a couple of times but always go back to the same career. I guess because Im more comfortable doing the norm. Thats going to change though!

- If you have begun your "career", is this what you saw yourself doing/wanted in your 20's? I had never considered it before I fell in to it. A friend lured me and I fell in love.

I think it's a great idea to finish school. Things will get much more interesting when you graduate. The learning and exploring will go on forever and you can't predict where exactlty you'll end up. Keep doing what you love and what your good at!

I knew what I wanted to do when I went into college. I loved school and while I was there I knew I was right. But then I got out and found the work I was doing wasn't as fun or collaborative in the real world as it was in college and it paid horribly (I knew it paid badly from the start I just thought I would be enjoying the work) so about two years out of school when I was 22 or so. I changed what I was doing (In the same basic field) did it for 2 and a half years and in the fall I'm going to grad school for it. I feel like it's what I want to do with the rest of my life. But if I'm wrong I'll change again.
