Job Concern....Need advice

Ive been dating my boyfriend a little over a year now. In all honesty, I feel that, unless something drastic happens, we will end up getting married.

However, I am not one to get married, have kids, etc etc. unless I know both parties are financially able to do so. That leads to my concern that my boyfriend graduated last May with a degree in textile management (or something like that) and has NO luck with finding a job. Im worried that he may never find a job in that field, which would (and I guess selfishly on my part) not allow us to ever get married.

Should he persue a different degree in a different concentration or just continue to look? Any advice?

I'm assuming you work as well? The economy is pretty bad still in many sectors with slow recovery. I'm sure he'll find a job sooner or later if not find alternate jobs?

We both work as servers right now but I am still in school and will be graduating in December. My degree is Communications which I think will allow me to have more options job wise.

How soon do you two want to get married? Yes I agree that financial stability will be a wise choice before getting married and settling down. But it sounds like you two have a new career ahead and will probably focus on that more before the marriage happens?

I dont want to get married right now. I am 22 right now (will be 23 in september) and he is 23 (will be 24 in July). I would say, if I had to throw a number out there, probably when I am 25 or so. Im just scared hes is going to be like 28 still waiting tables.

Even if he doesn't pursue a career with his degree I'm sure he will find a suitable job to make more income. I wouldn't worry in that sense. Having the education alone will land him a job better than someone who doesn't have a degree in many cases.

A deep recession is no time to measure anyone's career potential. He's waiting tables and not sitting home making excuses. He'll need to ride this thing out with the rest of us, and frankly, he's lucky to have the job he has right now. There are thousands willing to trade places with him.

OP, I am in the same situation as you are in and absolutely feel for you. My boyfriend and I want to get married and are out of college. The problem is that we cannot find careers to support each other. We have been dating for 6 years now and are super anxious of holding up on the idea of marriage. I have been working in temporary positions and at one point worked two jobs. My partner has a degree in Radiology, has done 4 months of full-time volunteer work at an urgent care clinic, and STILL can't find a job.

I say continue to look unless he is crazy about going into a medical field (which takes YEARS of schooling and holding high grades). Does he have the money or want to take out student loans, go into a college program that won't guarantee him a job either?

If you're going to "go back to school," take some basic useful classes like Microsoft Office certification courses or a brief business writing course. Those look good on a resume. Having a Microsoft word/excel certification may help you and community colleges offer those programs at a cheaper price (like under $100 and 2 times a month).

The other option is to go into internships or volunteer work to build up his experience on a resume.

The economy is rough on everybody. It doesn't matter what degree you have unless you are in the medical field or know people. Have faith in your boyfriend and within yourself to pull through. You can't expect yourselves to find something quickly nowadays. Patience is the key.

I would have to disagree. Most places prefer experience over education. That's what holding me up from gaining a career into teaching because some other teacher with more years of experience is always offered the job first. It doesn't matter if I have high college credentials, help lead a club/event on campus that promoted racial and cultural diversity, or am certified. I met a guy with a pHD working at Petsmart, shoveling fish gravel.
