length of workouts

Recommended Posts

How long is your workout usually? I went to the gym today and tried using some of their machines. After 15 minutes, I was dead tired and sweating. There are so many machines, some of which I don't know how they work.

Tomorrow I have a session with a trainer. With my 7 day trial membership, I was given one session with a trainer. Session is 60 minutes. I have no idea what to expect. I have no stamina and can't seem to work out for more than 15 minutes at a time. Just swimming for a 1/2 hr is hell for me and I rest a lot.

Also, do you find that you are VERY hungry after working out? The gym I am working out at, is part of a whole beach entertainment complex and there are some really decent restaurants there where one can get healthy food for a decent price (incl 15% gym discount). I need to make sure I eat healthy BUT not eat out a lot

I also went walking by the beach today. The waves were very high.

My exercises varies depending on how I feel. Sometimes I'll work out for a few minutes, other times I would do so for an hour.

Are you doing any stretching exercises beforehand?

Yes, it's normal to feel hungry after working out. Please make sure you eat something at least an hour before your session with the trainer. Otherwise, you will feel very lightheaded. Nothing heavy, but light. It is never good to work out on an empty stomach.

I am usually starving after my workout. Since you are just starting the gym, you can't expect to work out long and hard. You need to gradually get into it or you will find yourself exhausted and not looking forward to the next session.

Imagine my surprise when I went back for the first time after 4 years of not going. I went into the gym with the attitude that I was going to pick up where I left off, I hopped onto a machine and thought I was going to have a stroke. It's been a month and I'm better but no where near where I was all those years ago when I was in the gym for hours at a time.

Give it time Renny.....You will build up endurance and strength and stamina.

I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo proud of you!

Yes, it is always recommended that you do stretching exercises beforehand to increase your flexibility and also to reduce the risk of injuries.

I had a personal trainer at one point, and he always made me eat an hour beforehand, and always required that I did some stretches before our workout.

MG, thanks for believing in me.

Part of the reason why I want to join a gym is that it GETS me out of my apartment since I have to DRIVE to get here. I also like that it's next to the beach because I can go for a walk afterwards (I love being by the ocean, hence why I live in this city).

I need to keep with this. Plus doing this is a bit more solitary which is more up my alley. I don't really like interacting with people and when you work out, you can tune out people (the workout area has a few TVs with different channels on) and listen to music.

I always have my mp3 playing when I am there. I tune everyone out and focus on my workout.

But don't discount meeting new people there. You are bound to come accross some really nice people there on a daily basis. I usually see this one group of people that take a step class and they all seem very warm towards each other.

I only do half an hour of cardio 3 to 4 days a week. Usually I use the elliptical because it burns way more calories than the bike, but I do the bike sometimes too. I eat about 1500 to 1700 calories a day. I find this routine to be great for me, keeps me where I want to be body wise.

I think it's great that you joined the gym! And I hear you on the 15 min. When I first started working out, it KILLED me to do 15 min. I would have to stop and take a break before starting up again. So it's totally normal for you to feel like this. Once you get into a routine of going a few times a week, you will notice yourself getting better and better. It's a great feeling to do a complete workout Keep it up and you will be amazed at the results! Good for you.

Savagegirl, I wanted to use the elliptical today but there was too many people on them and I feel self-conscious using one in the middle of the crowd (since I can't do a long workout).

But don't feel that way Renny, sometimes I use it just as a warm up. There is no right or wrong amount of time to use the machine. If you only want to do 5 minutes on the thing, then do your 5 minutes and venture off to another machine.

You should never feel self-conscious about it. Everyone goes to the gym for a reason, you have to start somewhere. When I used to go to the gym, I would get tired after 3 minutes on the elliptical. I managed to do 5 minutes (still an improvement) and moved on the next machine. Who cares what people say? They don't pay your bills - stick to this motto and you'll be fine.

I agree.....and I want to add that if these people are really worried about how many minutes you stay or don't stay on a machine then they have bigger problems.

You go in there with your head held high and do the best you can. Next week it will get easier and the week after it will be even easier. Pretty soon you will be talking about how 30 minutes on the elipitcal is a breeze.

I don't think people really care how long I use the machines. I think it is me more being self-conscious.

Do you guys ever find that you eat way too much after you work out, esp if food is available? I was tempted to get food at the complex today (they have healthy choices), but I also need to watch my money, although gym members get 15% off the food.

Exactly. Trust me, no one is going to pay attention to how long you are on any of the machines for. Some of people at my gym go on it for small amounts of time, some stay on it longer, really no one will be timing you or judging you on how long you are on a machine for. And if they do, they seriously have to get a life!

The elliptical is a pretty intense machine though. I can go on the bike for half an hour and only burn 140 calories, and the same amount of time on the ellipitcal I burn 260. So it's sooo normal to be tired on it for the first while.

Yeah I am always starving after my work out for sure! My fiance and I go together after work, then come home and shower and then eat dinner. You will notice you'll be hungrier and that's ok, just make sure not to go binging on bad foods aferwards, otherwise there goes your workout!

Not me.....In fact I am adamant that I will not eat a lot after my workout. I will have something light. Afterall, I didn't just nearly kill myself in the gym to go stuff my body with more food. LOL

Yesterday, I was starving when I left and then I went to the market and I was actually really lightheaded and realized I needed to eat something quick. I went to taco bell and ordered a chicken soft taco, fresco style and it was perfect. I was satisfied with just that.

Ren, I bet if you do go for a few weeks and start seeing some results, and notice how much better you feel about yourself, you will want to keep going! It's such an amazing feeling after a work out, you really do get a bit of a high from it! You are going to love the way you feel and love the extra engery that comes with it.

Oh and this is coming from someone who up until last November, never worked out a day in her life! LOL I'm 30 now too. I wish I had started exercising so long ago.

eat smaller portion meals more a day. stay away from eating 2-3 large meals a day.

any good trainer will work you out at your own pace.

don't overdue it especially if you are just starting.

thanks!

Hopefully it will be a good workout tomorrow. I've never worked out with a trainer before.

My only concern right now is that I don't fit well on some of the exercise equipment, like on the weights or even the exercise bike. Even if I move the seat really close I have issues with sitting properly on the exercise bike.

I have the height of a grade school kid.
