Cognitive_Canine
I had strep throat a few weeks back. After I finished my anti-biotics, my tonsils started swelling again a few days later. Also, I got a weird burning sensation in my throat. I ignored it for a week as I was too busy to see a doctor but it kept me up at night. It began to hurt to swallow, so, I went to see a doctor. They tested for strep and the test came back negative. They told me it was probably allergies. But, I've lived in this area for 3 years and visited many times during the spring and I have never had allergies here. I have allergies from my home town, but never here. Also, my symtoms don't feel anything like allergies. Swollen tonsils? And this horrible burning feeling? Are these symptoms that people get? I've never heard of it. Does anyone get these symptoms with allergies? Should I seek out a second opinion? And, how can I make the burning sensation in my throat go away? I've been chewing lozenges all day but as soon as it dissolves, the burning returns. It's a quick fix that wears off too soon. Link to comment
JackPotential
Are you getting a fever? Yea, doctors are about the worst people qualified to help with your health. Link to comment
HouseKitten
My sister has a ton of allergies. They have gotten worse as she gets older - they weren't that bad when she was young, she's now allergic to all nut types and sometimes has a reaction for no apparent reason in dusty or hot conditions - once or twice while she was driving. She describes it as her throat swelling. I guess it's different for everyone, but maybe you do have a minor allergy that has developed over time. A second opinion can't hurt. If it could be allergies, maybe you could get your house or apartment professionally cleaned or something to see if that helps, get rid of anything flying around in the dust or dirt. Link to comment
greywolf
That's odd. Do you think it could be a reaction to the antibiotics? I got an infection in my mouth after being on antibiotics, but it went away on its own. Link to comment

Maybe but does that seem right to get it after you've stopped? =/ I honestly do not know as I've never had an allergic reaction to medicine. HouseKitten- sounds like you can get a burning throat with allergies. I just really didn't want it to be allergies because there is little I can do about it and it'll be a reoccurring thing if that is true. Link to comment
Miss Firecracker
If it doesn't stop soon, I'd make them do another culture. Link to comment
_Asti_
I have noticed a chronic sore throat since the weather has changed and allergies are in season. I've been told at work [by many nurses..] its most likely allergies. Never had it before. I have noticed that my allergies in the spring are not consistent. The symptoms, and just in general. Some years I have nothing, the next year I am a mess, this year I am only experiencing chronic sore throat, with occassionally sneezing. Link to comment

I have had very consistent hay fever in the fall until I moved three years ago to the area I live now. I've just now gotten allergies here and it's in the spring. Can allergies develop in adulthood? _Asti_
Sure. Your reaction is based on being exposed to something...if whatever is irritated you now is fairly new to you, then it makes sense for a new allergy to be creeping up on you. Especially if you've just recently moved to this new area. Link to comment
