nickvanzanten
I've been working at Meijer for 6 years. I requested to have a personal day for memorial day this year but the lines manager denied it because there are 4 guys above me in seniority that wanted it off. I'm never gonna get a holiday off as long as they remain working there. They'll never give me a chance. 3 of them are married and the other is not. Now I don't know what to do. I have some festivities that I want to go to but I don't know how to get there. I may just not go at all because of work. If the economy wasn't so dreadful I'd be working somewhere where I get holidays off for cryin out loud. Those guys above me are never gonna give me a chance. Link to comment

coyote1980
Hello, I'm soooo sorry to hear that. I feel your pain. If it makes you feel better, I work at a Japanese owned company in USA, and I don't get Japanese or US holidays off. You guys don't have HR? You can always file a compaint there. Link to comment
septembermourning
hey, heads up! don't post your company's name on any website, I would take it off immediately. They may trace back to you and you'll get your wish, no more job! Link to comment

karvala
If they denied him a personal day how in the world would he be able to take a sick day??? Well I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek, but as you ask the question seriously, I would respond by saying it depends on his specific terms of employment and the law where he lives, but it is highly unlikely that he needs his employer's permission to have time off sick. If you are sick, you are sick, regardless of permission. The vast majority of employers use a self-certification approach for the first few days off sick, some others require a more stringent doctor's certificate. I've not yet heard of a case where an employee has been fired for taking a single, properly certified sick day where the employer did not give permission, and in the UK they have would have a case for unfair dismissal if they were, but I don't know where the OP is, or what the law will say in his case. Probably not if he took that sick route first but since he took the personal day route and was denied there would be no way he could get away with using a sick day. Link to comment

shikashika
Being written up for taking a sick day after being denied a personal day for that particular day to write someone up for being sick would be illegal where I work. Link to comment

InvisibleOne
Sounds to me like a bit of a hostile work environment you got there. Just go with the flow for now, fighting back doesn't help in most cases. If you're too unhappy, try looking for a different job. Link to comment
