KG
Had a big Track meet today, but got put into a different race then he normally runs. 7 1/2 laps around a track, in 77 F weather. He just texted me, last out of 12. Major bummed. I texted back that he finished the race, would kill a normal kid. Any suggestions about how to cheer him up when he gets home tonight? Link to comment
SapphireNoir10
Just make sure he knows your proud anyway and that winning REALLY isnt the most important thing. Cook him his favourite food? Get a movie in for the two of you? Link to comment
COtuner
Not making a big deal about it used to help me when my teams had their butt kicked (this from friends, since my parents didn't pay any attention). We'de forget about it and talk about what the next game was going to be like, or what the coach had planned for next week. Just do something you'd normally do on a Saturday night together, spend some time hanging out with him having fun Link to comment
COtuner
saying "winning isn't the most important thing" never worked for me. After all, it was a competition. When I lost I'd be mad as hell and all fired up to win the next event. Link to comment

Get a movie in for the two of you? He doesn't get in till late. Doing that tomorrow. I let him know I'm proud of him finishing. He is very competitive, but had 1 day to train for 3000 meters. That's 1 3/4 miles. Link to comment
SapphireNoir10
I mean yeah sure it was important to that event, but its not the most important thing ever. I dont know I dont have kids so I would probably say something like 'winning isnt the most important part' and they'd be like 'Erm yes it is' But, its just letting him know your proud and your SURE he'll do better next time. AND In that case, of one day training, he did well just to finish it. Its impressive. Link to comment

Let him know that he can't expect to perform a heat hes not conditioned in. His competitors were mentally and physically more prepared than him. He'd most likely smoke em in shorter heats. Or do like my mom did once and bought me new Spikes. That way you two can blame the shoes and the wind. Link to comment

KG
Ha Ha!!! I got pwned! He didn't finish last. I picked him up, he's grinning...shows me his ribbon for 6th place, out of 12. And he broke our school's record for the 3000. On his first try. I started crying, he's like "Dad, it was a perfect time to get you!" Prooouuuudddd Pappa! Link to comment
paintedfish
Awesome! Go him!!! Even doing it to start with, bravo, but breaking a school record? With one day to train?? Link to comment
lila...
Wow, considering it wasn't a race he trained for, he did awesome! Good for him! This happened to me a long time ago. Before an important meet I was told by my coach he was going to put me to run the 400 m hurdles- I forgot the reason, I think constraints too. Never in my life had I ever jumped a hurdle, I don't know what my coach was thinking. I finished second last, totally embarrassing! My friend who had also never done hurdles finished last so I didn't feel as bad lol. Link to comment
