11 teeth removed.

We knew Trixie needed to have her teeth cleaned in a bad way, but never imagined this. Due to her previous owner's abuse and malnourishment, her teeth have never been great but we tried our best with brushing and dental-friendly chew toys.

Took her to the Vet this morning, knowing they'd have to sedate her for a full-scale cleaning. The Vet called an hour or so ago with the prognosis.... 12-teeth are loose and 11 have to come out. All the bad ones are in front so she will keep her back teeth. She also had a wart removed from her lower lip, is on painkillers, antibiotics, full of stitches and will need to eat soft food for two-weeks.

I can't even think about the bill without shuddering. But it will make her a happier, healthier puppy. It makes me so angry to see how the previous owners treated her this way.

On the bright side, I guess our house guests are safer when she attacks their ankles (a common occurrence)...now they'll just get a gum-massage.

Poor thing. Please keep Trixie in your thoughts as she recovers... I pick her up in an hour.

Thanks, everyone. The vet said "soft" or wet food for two weeks, until her stitches heal and come out by themselves. I need to ask them if she needs to eat soft food for the rest of her life, but she still has all of her back teeth in good shape, so I imagine hard food would still be good for her. Soft food would only rot the remaining teeth out.

And thanks for the compliments... we try to be good owners. We have three Chihuahuas... all rescues.

Awww...she's adorable! Poor baby. I'm sure she will feel better soon. Were any of the teeth abcessed, did they say? They will probably send her home on an antibiotic, either way. Probably "Antirobe" or something similar.

She'll be much better off without having those icky teeth in her mouth. We used to do dentals all the time on toy breeds and it seems that chihuahuas and poodles and Pomeraniam's etc, were very prone to dental problems and diseased gums/teeth.

She is in my thoughts! So are you...that bill will probably kind of shock you...but she is lucky to have a responsible owner like you!

Oh, you guys started it now. I can never pass up opportunities to show off our "kids." Yes, she will be on antibiotics (they said) but didn't tell me if any were abcessed. Oh, they've already told us the bill-damage. We're just thankful that we got our tax return... because now most of it will be gone. But that's what it is there for and we'd much rather have a healthy puppy. Take on three dogs, you've got to understand the risks and responsibilities. We knew something was wrong because 1) her breath was terrible, and 2) she was ALWAYS licking. Always. The air, the floor, everything, so we figured her teeth were bothering her quite a bit. Though it never seemed to affect her chewing on toys or her hard-food diet.

They sure are cute =)

Hopefully you guys were in a good situation to handle the bills.

I hate to see when couples put themselves in danger (forgo their own medical health, food, rent etc...) to "rescue the animals".

But if you could afford it even though the bill was large, then that's the best situation to be in.

Well, yes. When we got our tax return this year we told ourselves it was time to get Trixie's teeth done. We suspected they were going to be bad so while still hurts to be shelling out that much money, it wasn't a surprise. And believe me, were DONE rescuing... three Chihuahuas have the combined personality of a pack of wolves. LOL

My dog comes first. Leeluu's had surgery twice since I've last been to the girl doctor (I don't have insurance). I will gladly get her taken care of first. I'll live longer than she will most likely (if I don't get hit by a bus or something), so I will do anything to prolong her life!

Pet insurance can be iffy. If they have to have any surgery that's related to their breed, the insurance won't pay for it (for example, boxers are prone to tumors on her skin. Pet insurance wouldn't cover any of Leeluu's surgeries for her tumors--she's had a couple of them too).

Interesting. That sucks.

Update: We're home and Trixie is doing great. I'm sure the painkillers are kicked in because the first thing she did was run to a rawhide to chew on it. LOL Picked those up fast.

Vet showed me pictures from the surgery as well as the Xrays, we have all the extracted teeth (I wonder if there is a dog tooth fairy?) antibiotic and painkiller. Vet and the Techs all said she was a joy to work with. And the Vet burned off a skin tag on the top of her head for free...I got to watch that. Gross and smelly. LOL

Her breath is already 100% better... wow! Vet said her remaining teeth are in good shape and strong so we've just got to keep up with the brushing from now on to keep them in good shape.

Thanks for your well-wishes!

Aw poor trixie! When I got leeluu's surgery 2 years ago, she was soooo stoned she couldn't keep her head up. Her mouth was so dry so her lips were permanently stuck to her teeth. I felt bad taking pictures of it b/c it was cute.

Your dogs are so cute! The thought of your dog having to go through so much pain just makes me feel like crying. I had a root canal done once and that was horrible. I can't even image.

He will feel much better though that he has you there to cuddle him.

AWWW. How sweet- it looks as if her friends are there to lay next to her as she recovers. Too cute!

Gums are one of the fastest healing tissues in the body so she will feel better soon. She also won't bomb out people with her breath anymore, which is a plus for her social life.
