CynicalGuitarist
I don't know what it's gonna do; maybe it'll reach pandemic, maybe it's just another scare... However, if I die from it, oh well. I won't be too sad; I'll let the disease take care of what I'm too afraid to do myself. I just hope it won't hurt my family and friends. If I get bit by it and get called to hell by Lucifer himself, I don't want anyone to cry or mourn; I want to get creamated and have people throw a huge party... dump my ashes where they dumped my dad's in Hawaii and have a PARTY. Smoke some herb, drink some drank, eat some mushrooms if that's your thing, eat good food, get laid, talk about stupid stuff, do stupid stunts that can only be done at parties or under the influence... ENJOY what little joy there is to be had... because what is happening has shown me one thing; just how fragile and short life on this planet really is. I just wish I knew when I was going to die so I can dump every last penny to my name and money in my savings into a decent amount of high-grade marijuana and a beautiful escort. Link to comment
ProtestTheHero
It's pretty much not killing anyone in the USA for whatever reason (access to care or healthier populations...no idea). This isn't a SARS type of thing where it just * * * * s you up completely when you catch it, so I wouldn't worry. Link to comment
miracle29
Good point. I also tried to post a short on this yesterday but if something CAN be taken wrong it WILL be taken wrong. Anywho...I like the way you put it. My only concern is my litlte one. As long as she is ok I feel I can battle anything. Not everyone is going to die from this. Just like mysteriously Magic Johnson has not had even one symptom of Aids...who knows...how he's lasted so long. Not that I wish him any harm , but I just wanted to point it out. I hope this can be contained. Link to comment
COtuner
I think it's an excuse to get publicity and the whole thing is getting ridiculous. It's like the states want to prove they are prepared and hauling out the Tamiflu. Now Obama is calling for a billion and a half dollars to combat it? I think the guy is off his rocker. If the news treated the spread of the common cold the way they do this flu, and didn't tell anyone which illness they were tracking on the large and colorful map, they could panic the US at the spread of this "virus" same way they are with swine flu. It's no worse than any ordinary flu! Link to comment
melrich
It's no worse than any ordinary flu! Thanks Doc. That is reassuring to know. Flu spreads around the world in link removed link removed, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands annually — millions in link removed years. Three influenza pandemics occurred in the 20th century and killed tens of millions of people, with each of these pandemics being caused by the appearance of a new link removed of the virus in humans. The flu killed more people in the 20th Century than any other virus. Link to comment
Nixee
It's no worse than any ordinary flu! I actually tend to agree .... symptom wise... no different. Only real difference is that it is NEW, and they don't have a grip on it yet, which makes people go nuts. But in all seriousness.... to leap to the fear of death already as so many people seem to do? Only FIVE US cases have even resulted in hospitalization so far. Link to comment
Umlunguusa
honestly, I wouldn't mind dying...not because I'm sad, just because I'm curious as to what's on the other side...lol but you're not suicidal, are you? Link to comment
Nixee
The flu killed more people in the 20th Century than any other virus. Correct, the flu is dangerous. But widespread panic is dangerous too. It is best to be educated, prepared and informed. During the SARS outbreak of 2003 there was much fear of widespread death as well. Then I was told I would die of bird flu. Link to comment
melrich
Correct, the flu is dangerous. Unfortunately I think too many people think the flu is about the same as the common cold. Equally unfortunately it only seems to bother some people if it kills people in the USA. Each year the flu kills 1000s of people in the US and hundreds of thousands worldwide. The threat is mainly to the young and the elderly and yes, if you are aged between 15 and 50 and healthy you are unlikely to die from it. So maybe you are right to not worry about it as it is only likely to kill other people. Link to comment
Miss Firecracker
This one likes to kill young, healthy adults more than anyone else. Why is preparing for a pandemic a bad thing? I'll bet the people who aren't worried will be first in line for the drugs. Link to comment
Jetta
Get this I have the flu after getting the flu shot and it's not the swine flu. Here I thought I may actually die from something. Not that anyone in the U.S. is so lucky. Then again I was hoping to be on the news for the 1st case in Minnesota. Nope no luck there either. Link to comment
jul-els
If a pandemic hits, you'll know it and nothing the news can say will have any bearing on it. Enjoy your life. Don't buy the fear. Link to comment
Wolf_22
I've had swine flu before. No biggy. The worst part of it was that I gained about 150 lbs and my skin turned pinkish-tan! ...Back to normal the next summer. Link to comment
CynicalGuitarist
great responses, everyone! Very interesting perspectives. honestly, I wouldn't mind dying...not because I'm sad, just because I'm curious as to what's on the other side...lol but you're not suicidal, are you? negative; I'm way too chicken to be suicidal. I'm always afraid I might fail... I just wish I could somehow scry into a bowl of water and see if this thing will kill me so then I can empty out my savings and spend a happy day at Six Flags doing whatever I want before my soul wafts away to the summerland (oh, how poetic) This one likes to kill young, healthy adults more than anyone else. Why is preparing for a pandemic a bad thing? I'll bet the people who aren't worried will be first in line for the drugs. I won't buy into the drugs like that; if I die from it, oh well. Why get an injection of something that's probably gonna make it worse or act as a placebo anyways? Well, if this likes to kill young healthy people, time for me to start chowing down on Del Taco, Jimboys, Panda Express, and some Kalua pork etc. etc. Link to comment
greywolf
hmmmm... actually a friend of mine died yesterday from the flu. EDIT: actually, that's their guess. The autopsy will be done today to figure out what it was. Link to comment

So maybe you are right to not worry about it as it is only likely to kill other people. As a fairly well educated individual who comes from a family with a medical professional in it, I'm totally aware of the flu's potential. However, I think people are going off the deep end because we as a culture have simply learned to panic. Why do people think we get a flu shot every year? Why do companies go to the effort to create one? Because it can be dangerous to some people. The only thing different about this one is that it's a new strain. Well, we have had other new strains of the flu recently - I had one myself that was totally unrelated to the virus they were giving shots for a couple years ago. All I'm saying is that people need to calm down and get some education. Link to comment

During the SARS outbreak of 2003 there was much fear of widespread death as well. Then I was told I would die of bird flu. Yeah, I lived through the whole SARS thing. At the place I worked in the Bay Area, most of the comany came from Southeast Asia. We had people traveling back and forth, and people were freaking out. We all wore masks and they quarantined the employees before they could come back to work. That was a bit more frightening than this flu outbreak, unless this flu mutates into something really strange. Link to comment
