Is it possible to go to school in the day time and work too

Recommended Posts

I want to go to school in the day time because it will be better for me and I will graduate faster. I have a lot of bills though, is it possible. This is like my dream and I finally want to do it. I just don't think I can..has anyone ever done it before? What type of jobs could I actually take that are at night? I don't think I will be able to do this.

I just don't think I can

Yes is it possible. Why do you say this? What really is your struggle? Only you can make it not possible with a negative attitude. Who or what is telling you that is not possible. You seem quite driven.

Myself, just like many do every year, get their degree working on the side part/full time. I would lecture you but you need to do what is best for you. Please think long term with your decisions. You really do already have your own answer. PM me if needed.

what about waitressing? i'm so glad i waitressed during college. i went to school during hte day and waitressed at chili's at night all through college. i'd work about 4 hours a night, sometimes longer on weekends (up to 8) and make pretty good money doing it. i recommend that.

I don't think I could do waitressing I'm way to anxious around people, people freak me out big time, I have heard horror stories about waitressing...it scares the hell out of me just thinking about it...I'm being dramatic aren't I? lol Maybe I can try being a hostess or something?

But whats holding me back is that I have major debt and I have been struggling for almost 10 years trying to pay them off and my life seems to be wasting away. I was laid off and its opened my eyes and my credit is now going to hell and I'm thinking the best way for me to do better in life is to go to school and just do it. Its just one class. Its a technical school.

I think you can. I just saw a thread you posted about feeling lonely. Maybe being so busy and meeting new people will take your mind off being lonely for a while?

I know alot of people who work+study. And it's going really well. I know I'd be pretty pooped. Then again I'm a bit lazy at times lol. Even if it isn't what you're used to, you will get used to it within a month.

Do you live alone? What are your monthly expenses like? Try and make a calculation of what you think you'll be earning and what the expenses are.

Yeah I live alone, my monthly expenses are pretty steep like almost 2000 a month or so.. rent included. Its hard... I was thinking school and work would help me make friends too so I wouldn't be so lonely and sad all the time. Wasting away on the internet and sitting on the couch.

If you really, really, want it, you will and can do anything to get it. I have been going to school and working two and three jobs for over ten years. Oh, during that time I also raised my son and have had two serious relationships. Yep, it can be done. You just have to realize that you will be planning every day in 15 minute increments. I get very little free time, but I am working on my fourth degree and am absolutely in love with my career!

That's why you won't be able to.

Apart from all that, just thinking on a financial perspective, how did you get yourself in all that debt? Are you still spending more than you are earning? Are you still borrowing? Are there any non-essential expenses you can lay off at this moment?

Well when I was younger my mom bought a house and put it in my name, I got all these credit cards in the mail... and was dumb and uneducated.. I ran all my bills up. I stopped but its too late you know?

I'm sorry about my last post, it was quite cold. I'm also sorry to hear about what happened in the past - especially when it was not under your control (the house bit). I don't think it's too late - nothing is too late. Do you have any job ambitions? Maybe you could study something in college that would help this ambition as I think that studying something outside this field may be of little benefit for the immediate time being.

I don't exactly know how life is like in the US, but when I was younger my parents told me about the disgusting side of credit cards and the rat race to achieve a comfortable lifestyle too quickly. It's all a vicious cycle.

I did it for 3.5 years but it wasn't easy. Toward the end, I wasn't able to keep my marks up so I quit working, which also meant that I quit eating and paying my rent.

...But I'm sure you could do a better job of it than me. The key is to not bite off more than you can chew. Don't get a job that messes with your sleep schedule. Start off with one or two classes and see how that goes.

Some of the jobs I had:

-waitressing

-bartending

-coffee shop

-baking muffins

-phone customer service

-bike courier

-writing academic papers for students (yeah, I know, sketchy)

-night auditor in a hotel

-afterhours bar

Another option is to get a degree online or through the mail. Most universities now offer online programs, so you're not going to have to go through some low-rate school with a bad reputation.

Yes you're being dramatic about waitressing. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. Here's something you need to learn: people are everywhere. You're going to come accross them one day.

I'm pretty introverted around people I don't know. They make me nervous and I always feel like they're laughing at me behind my back. Waitressing broke me out of my shell and kept my bills paid. I worked maybe 20 hours a week and lived comfortably off tips while in school. It's the best way to make money you need on few hours so you can focus on school.

Start out as a hostess or at a coffee shop. It's worth the money.

u can probably qualify for fafsa and just go to school full time. later, you will have to pay it back, but you can afford a lot with it. or, you can work at night as there are more jobs available for night shifts at places so school during the day would be perfect.

So FAFSA is enough money to pay for school and some bills? I thought that FAFSA was only to be used for school expenses. I applied for a student loan and I was approved but it doesn't cover all my school expenses so they said they are going to try and get me a grant or something like that. I can't really remember exactly, I need to call them back when I finish my taxes.

When you apply for student aid through FAFSA, they just cut you a check for whatever you accept, and they don't look to see what you use the money for, besides school tuition.

I got enough loans and grants in college to pay for all of school (though some was already paid for b/c of scholarshop) and books and some of my bills. They pretty much cut you a check and you spend it where you want.

right. i always get approved for more than i need. i take the rest which gets transferred into my bank account. i use it to pay off credit cards and my car. once i'm done with that, i will be able to pay school back rapidly. the interest rate is really low and in most cases doesn't kick in until you graduate or stop going to school full time.

if you aren't working much or have a low paying job, fafsa will give you a lot based on how much you go to school. always pick full time even if you go for 6 credits a semester.

so if fafsa a loan? i thought it didn't have to be piad back. then howcome you have to be approved? i never got approved. it upset me.

fafsa for me was for the pell grant. i don't remember how i got the loan. the grant doesn't have to be paid back. the stafford loan didn't have to start being paid on till after i graduated.

yes, fafsa is a federal loan. certain factors allow you to qualify. debt to income ratio, taxes, income, how much you have saved in the bank, etc. grants do not have to be paid back but usually don't give you much and some are hard to get.

sf, maybe you filled it out properly. you have to make like $65,000 a year to not qualify for anything.
