At first I thought nothing of it but one of my friends think it's a big deal. Is it really?

I wouldn't think into too deeply. He most likely has to go and needs a date so his girlfriend only makes sense. Just think of it as an opportunity to meet more of his family, if you do in fact wish to get more serious down the road.
