CoCo2009
California was supposed to be getting a extension and I read it online and I wanted to know if anyone has experience with this. I am looking for work now but I'm afraid because I haven't found anything. I want to start getting my life in order. I looked at the stub that comes with my check and the balance equals out to that I only have one and a half checks left. The date states that my claim expires in October. I'm confused and I don't know if I would qualify for extended benefits. I keep calling and they are too busy. Does anyone have any experience with unemployment? I just want to keep the benefits until I can find a job, I don't want to just sit at home an collect the benefits, because thats wrong. Thanks Link to comment
Xetra Dax
I also had to deal with a system that was so fricken complicated i just couldn`t get thru the wires of the bureaucratic web, i just said to hell with it and stopped wasting time on it and used that time to find a job instead. Honestly its better to gather scraps of money , even a paper boy job is better then gathering those benefit system things. But its really though, i experienced tho that if you really really want to get a job you can get one. Remember persistance is the key to succes. Be carefull with your money. Link to comment
CoCo2009
Well I can't just not get any money, I'll be kicked out so I need these benefits. I really want a job and I don't have one. California is pretty bad right now. Link to comment

itsallgrand
I'm not from Cali and don't know how it works there... but have you gone to the office to discuss this in person? I haven't collected but have helped others collect and it's a lot easier to work with people than a system designed to make it tougher on you and easier for them. They will probably piss around but what you do have right now is a few hours to spend to sort this out and find out where you stand. Just don't go away until you are helped. Link to comment
Caldus
Keep bothering them until you get a straight, clear answer from someone a little higher up the chain. Never rely on the low level people that don't know a thing about the system they work in. I'm not insulting them, it's just how it is. I work on the bottom of the chain of my company and I don't know a thing about all of silly bureaucratic networks there. The more you bother them, the more they realize you are more serious about your inquiry. Especially for something as important as what you are dealing with, you need straight answers now. Good luck! catfeeder
They don't deal with people over the phone during crunch times like this recession. They're dealing with long lines of people who showed up there to speak with them, so go there and be one of those people. Bring your pen so when they give you your answer you can fill out the form for your extension on the spot. Ehm...unless they send you back home to complete it online. ; ) Best wishes, and in your corner. Link to comment
Caldus
Wouldn't it be nice if it was all electronic? We never seem to take advantage of what we have. We always resort back to the gool 'ol paper forms and waiting in long lines. We waste more time doing things that way. Link to comment

I love working with people face to face. I like driving people up the wall asking questions and seeing what these people actually do and know. So CoCo, any luck yet? What's up? Link to comment

catfeeder
You said your benefits stop in October? If so why are worying about a extension now? Or maybe I read that wrong. No, her claim ends in October. Two different things. She's only got a week and a half left of benefit money for this claim. You can open a claim, use part of the benefits, go back to work, then get laid off again and reopen the same claim. Or, you can extend the number of weeks you're paid benefits by working part time. This means you're paid only partial benefits each week, but you can extend the number of weeks you collect up to the end of the claim. Link to comment
shayshay07
I got extended benefits from Maryland recently. In my state, you have to call them and re-open your claim. It will not be done automatically for you. I was frustrated about it because MD doesn't have walk-in offices. Extensions have to be filed over the phone, and the line was ALWAYS busy. I tried to get thru many times a day for two weeks. One morning I got up, called them at 7:30am on the dot when they opened, and finally got thru that way. Link to comment
Sami Sue
Thank you, I read that before I just didn't understand the last stipulation..I'll figure it out. Thanks again! From the EDD link "Have a regular UI claim where the total amount earned in the base period is either: More than 40 times your weekly benefit amount, OR More than 1.5 times the highest quarter in your base period." I'm assuming that this is the part that has you confused. When you filed the initial claim, you had to state your earnings for the last 12 months (the base period for CA). So, if your weekly benefit is $300, then you need to have earned at least $12,000 over the last year ($300 x 40). This is your weekly benefit times 40. Most individuals will qualify for the extension. The second string criteria is less likely to apply unless you only worked for a few months out of the base year. I'd be happy to help you sort this out the best I can. Hopefully you can be spared an all day trip to the office! If this isn't the issue you needed clarified, please re-post or PM me. Best Wishes, Sami Sue Link to comment
CoCo2009
Okay so if I earned 12,000 or more last year that means I qualify? Is that what you are saying? lol I'll pm you! .thanks. Link to comment
