Seymore
...is it just our own intuition? (Sorry, thread title was too long and got cut off, I guess) I'm not even sure where this goes, so since this forum has the word "spirit" in it, here goes: My family on my mom's side has always been sort of spiritual, but I myself don't know what to believe. My mother was born in Europe. When her mother gave birth to her, she had said "This one is not for me". When she was 20, my mother met my father in the U.S., left her family behind, and has lived here ever since. It seemed that my grandma always knew my mother wouldn't stay. A few minutes after my grandmother passed on (this was 18 years ago), my cousin asked her spirit to give a sign that she was okay. Literally about 2 minutes later, an earthquake occurred. Farfetched? Probably. Either way, I thought of this and I remembered the second date me and my ex went on after we first met. We were sitting outside on a park bench, and I heard my grandma's voice saying: "She's not for you". It kind of shook me up inside, but I fought it. Still, a part of me wonders if it was possibly true, or just my own intuition telling me that the future wasn't bright for us. Maybe subconsciously I took all of the negatives that I would blatantly overlook and put them together to see that there would be tremendous difficulty having a relationship with her. I'd like to believe in the supernatural, but at the same time I feel silly thinking this way. Has anyone else thought about stuff like this? Link to comment
_Asti_
We have this thing in our family where we've tagged certain animals with someone. My grandfather's favorite bird was a cardinal, and he tried and tried to get cardinals in his yard/garden and he couldn't. He passed away and since then, there's been a cardinal dancing around the garden, sitting near the porch, playing around on the clothes line while my grandmother hangs her laundry. Creepy? Maybe. I think we all started to get freaked out when my uncle passed away and a cardinal sat in a tree close by during his burial. Link to comment
indierockgrl
YES... i believe that 100%. my boyfriend died 4 months ago suddenly and i believe he has sent messages to me from beyond.... they are subtle but i know that it was him... i am at total peace with it. the voice you heard may very well be from your grandma or even your spirit guide.... i know that there are alot of skeptics out there... i would believe what brings you the most peace... dont let anyone tell you its impossible... because who really knows...... follow your heart and intuition..... i know mine never let me down. Seymore
But what do you believe, Asti? Do you think it's possible? I mean, stuff like that doesn't just HAPPEN. I have my own spiritual beliefs (more like speculations) related to your story, I just keep them in because people think I'm ridiculous if I share them. If nothing else, a story like yours would bring comfort in feeling your grandfather was still around. Link to comment

Jonboy582
Well personally I really don't believe in communicating with the dead at all. I believe in science. When your dead your dead, its a part of the circle of life as the lion king would say. As for the earthquake as a sign, sorry but an earthquake is an earthquake. Living people can't make them so spirits with no physical form have even less chance if you believe in that stuff. As for hearing her voice, could you not have heard someone else in the distance and mistook them. Or maybe you were thinking back to what your grandmother said about your mum. So yeah, to me, when your dead your dead. We are not special compared to any other creature. We are only more intelligent, and that's only down to us having two thumbs lol, we simply got lucky. _Asti_
It's brought us all comfort. We've tagged a blue jay as a symbol of my uncle now. I don't know if I believe or is it we're just being more observant, looking..searching for that sign that now we spot blue jays and cardinals here and there. I don't give it much thought, to be honest. If it gives people comfort, thats awesome..that's great. I think thats most important than trying to stop and think if it's possible. Link to comment

Or maybe you were thinking back to what your grandmother said about your mum. If anything it was the second thing. But that's what I mean - it could have been more intuition, like I knew something was wrong and subconsciously assigned that quote to the situation. And according to some study I read about a couple months back, they're even finding out now that even when you're "dead", you're not dead. Freaky stuff. More evidence that science doesn't have all the answers, and that's why I tend to wonder about the supernatural. Link to comment

I just know I never have and never will believe it myself. I put it down as a coping mechanism because when we are so hurt our minds will make us see/hear things to help us cope. The same with God, it gives us a greater sense of purpose. And according to some study I read about a couple months back, they're even finding out now that even when you're "dead", you're not dead. I am very dubious about "studies that show something", when they are replicated and backed by other Dr's then I will give them credit and believe what they say. Until then it is worthless. For example I have seen studies that showed British tap water increases your risk of cancer. But 99.9% of Drs and water experts said it was nonsense. Anyway each to their own, if you want to believe in this stuff believe in it. There are plenty of others out there like you Link to comment
BellaDonna
I often have dreams about people, and even animals, that have passed. I have dreams about my nucle who was killed last year, and a lot of dreams about one of my cats that had to be put down after 19 years. I don't know what they mean but I have pondered if they are still communicating with me in some way- either that or I just think about them so much and they are also in my subconscious and unconscious awareness at all times that I end up dreaming about them repeatedly. I had a terribly disturbing dream about my husband's deceased grandmother the other night- If it was a communication- it wasn't a good one. She was swaddled like a baby, in an infant's body and white receiving blanket- she had her adult face- and said to me "I'll be back in a month" I'm terrified that someone close to me will die in a month. I try to be logical- but the supernatural does peak my curiosity, and my fear. Link to comment
jul-els
My personal philosophy is that all things in the universe are in some way interconnected and that the mind can be and is a gateway to those various connections. It's just a matter of degree as to how open one's mind is to the signals. The cardinal example is a good one. I think the grandfather's thoughts of the cardinal were shared by his wife and upon his passing the energy she gave to the universe from that memory caused the cardinals to be attracted to her. Sounds hokey, I know. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth. Link to comment

top bloke
yes the dead do linger on earth for about a month or two. I found my grandparents sent me messages. Something amazing did happen to me but I cannot share it as my identity would be compromised. No need to be afraid of it though... Link to comment
NightLily
I don't believe in spirits, souls, or deities. But, I think that people have a lasting effect on you and by doing so and imparting their wisdom on you, in a way they do "communicate" with you. Memories and knowledge do physically alter the structure of the brain even if in only a minute way. For somebody who had a major influence, there will be many more neural pathways designated to them. So, when you dream, it is sort of energetically favorable for you to think of them. People can never really leave you because you don't only carry their memory but their consciousness also becomes integrated into yours on some level. Link to comment
Seymore
Damn, Suzyq, that's insightful. So people live on with and through us, just maybe not in the form people would generally think of. I'm still at the point where I don't know what I believe. Kinda off-topic, but that's why I believe wiping memories would be extremely dangerous (they're testing memory wipes on mice, from what I've read). Link to comment
NightLily
Yeah, have you seen Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? It’s a very intriguing movie dealing with the topic. Haha.. I dated a neurosciene master's student for too long. Link to comment
