hazylynx
ok i have really fair skin i think type one maybe type 2.. i mean i never tan i just burn.. well i do tan but; went on holiday to South africa for 2 months a while back, arrived back in england around early spring. my friend got more of a tan in a few days of fishing in the sun, then i got in 2 months!!! he probably has like type 3 maybe 4 skin.. i know my skin is healthy and his will just look really old in the future but still when i am on the beach or somthing i often get people saying ' i am very white'.. the most notable was a group of arabs at our hotel ha.. i somtimes even think about using a sunbed maybe or even dredding to say it fake tan.. Maybe it's an acute insecurity of mine..everyone else tanning but me ( maybe in northern europe there are more people like myself hah) Can anyone make any sense of that? Link to comment
Bad Wolf
If you're gonna use a sunbed, don't use it too much cause it can give you skin cancer. Link to comment
COtuner
I do not use any artifical tanning methods and am white most of the year. I used to get tanned because I lived in FL and CA and was always outside (I was a golden brown), but as I've aged, I cut it out. I'm not ghost white, though, I have a little bit of natural color. In makeup I always get "creamy natural" instead of fair (that might mean something to the women anyway). I wouldn't worry about it. Check with your dermatologist about the spray tan if you feel really self conscious maybe. Link to comment
dragon lady
You live in England...no Caucasians are tan there. I've seen it with my own eyes! I'd save it for something you get when you go away. I think it would look silly to have a year round tan there. Link to comment
Miss Firecracker
Very fair skin and sun won't mix. I've tried it, and I'm 50 years old. I regret every minute my face was in the sun. I paid for that. Had to use a lot of very abrasive and VERY expensive things to erase the damage on my face. Dark sun spots will age you much worse than wrinkles will. Fake tan sounds good to me. Just use lots of sun screen, and remember...tomorrow will come sooner than you think. Link to comment

Can't people(mainly females) just blatenly tell your wearing fake tan though? i heard somwhere if you apply it with moisturiser it looks more natural.. Link to comment
luxy
I've always wondered, why /do/ people tan? Why would anyone want to look darker than they naturally are? It doesn't make people look that much more attractive. The color you're born with is best, I think There's nothing wrong with white. Link to comment
ghost69
If you're gonna use a sunbed, don't use it too much cause it can give you skin cancer. captain obvious here. OP, what do you want to accomplish? you want to be tan?..then you will have to do something unfortunately; whether you decide artificial tanning, the natural sun, or just bronzers. i was using the standup tanning 'bed' a lot last spring to prepare for summer. i have some darker skin all year, but i'm not tan. i think tanning does make you stick out more than other people, but it will eventually be bad for you. i know it makes me look more muscluar and shows definition better. a girl i know that tans a lot and has been for a long time has spots all over her skin. i think she abused her skin too much. but it's to the point where she has to keep going to stay tan so that you can barely see the spots. Scorpion Fury
Do they have Mystic Tan in England? I'm sure they do somewhere. You can look into that. I'm not a fan of tanning beds anymore. I used to go all the time, but I've seen what happens to people. I don't want my face to look like a catcher's mitt. If I do it at all anymore, it's just at the start of summer to kinda jump start my tan, then I let the sun take over Link to comment
ghost69
i remember when my buddy got spray tanned for spring break. he did it twice in 2 days beforehand. he was orange. haha. omg we harassed him the whole time. Link to comment

SRTtoZ
I just recently started using a tanning bed at my gym....my membership gets free tannin so I take advantage. I was VERY VERY Pale for the longest time and thought I only "burned"...but I went 5 minutes for 1 week, then kept upping it until I got to the full 15 minutes and im nice and tan. Not too dark and not too light. Tanned people look healthier* That can attract a female. Pale= unhealthy. You also look like a fool if you are too tan. Link to comment
Cognitive_Canine
I am a big fan of applying tanner yourself. You can easily scrub it off quickly if you over dose and have complete control over where the tan goes and how much. I've never looked orange a day in my life and I rarely ever go out in the sun. When I am outside, I wear completely protective clothing and lots of sunscreen. Link to comment
Brisby
When I was in high school I use to go to the tanning beds every once in awhile to get darker. I regret it now even though I didn't do it as much as my best friend at the time did. I think it's better to use the fake stuff if you can get the kind that won't turn you into an orange. How about some bronzer? Link to comment
Organs
Go with the pale! I think it looks better than tanned skin, anyway. You know Rachel Weisz, Zooey Deschanel, brunette Keira Knightly, Audrey Tatou, and Anne Hathaway? They all have pale skin, and look great for it. If you have fair hair, maybe you should try dying it black or a really dark brown? Link to comment
vertigoxo
image removed Where are you, OP?!? I don't get the tanning trend. I'm "olive" (or medium, not sure) skinned and if I get any darker I'll just be black then, lol! Link to comment
hazylynx
I'm in Farnham England.. I'm fair skinned and well would like to get a little tan at least.. look healthier ( Though Fair skin is very healthy) One of my friends recommended me using link removed It does help as it builds a light tan and my face doesn't look so white I could use the tanning bed things at my gym, they even have this hand scanner to tell you how long you should go in for, the more then helpfull assistant told me that I need to be very careful to make sure I go in for that length of time.. I just want to get a really light tan, like on my face and neck.. Living in perpetual cloud cover in 'summer' doesn't help. Link to comment

It doesn't make people look that much more attractive. The color you're born with is best, I think There's nothing wrong with white. For a nerdy speculation on why folks tan: I think tanning started becoming popular in Western societies after the onset of the Industrial Revolution, when working class people moved away from doing labor work outside and into factories, and travel to international sunny destinations for leisure became more feasible among the upper classes. Prior to this era, if you look at art, you'll see that women with extremely pale skinned were viewed as the ideal by Europeans. I believe that these two changes helped to make tanning more popular because it meant that tanned skin was no longer associated with serfs/the working poor who had to "slave" away outside and became associated with those who had the wealth to afford to sit around all day tanning under the sun, i.e. the life of luxury, and hence beauty. It's an interesting dynamic given the history of skin colour prejudice primarily directed towards the darker races during much of the same period. Link to comment
LightbulbSun
If you're gonna use a sunbed, don't use it too much cause it can give you skin cancer. Agreed. Tanning beds are dangerous. OP, I also have really fair skin and burn easily. All you can do is lob on tons of tanning lotion and sunscreen, and wait patiently. It'll take longer for you to tan than others, but you'll eventually get there. Link to comment
