LAYAAN
So, my physician has told me not to run on a treadmill everyday b'coz of the some manufacturing defects that I've (wider hips, flat feet, putting more stress on my knees). I've currently injured my knee while running. But my physician has given me permission to go swimming. So, my Q is - - what can I do to take care of my hair and prevent it from going greenish, or dirty blonde due to chlorinated water. - I have a swimming cap but water still seeps in and my hair is 3-4 inches below shoulders. This may gross some people out - but I don't want to wash my hair more than 1/5 days with shampoo, its curly, gets very dry, takes long to air dry. Thank you Link to comment
nutbrownhare
I've had the same problem as you - you can actually get anti-chlorine conditioner and shampoo. I used to use a hat, but put conditioner on my hair, especially the ends, before getting into the water. The water has to be VERY warm before it washes off, and it really does protect your hair. But you will need to rinse your hair out, whatever you do. Hope this helps! Link to comment
Cognitive_Canine
I don't know much about black hair care, sorry. But, I do know that if you shower before getting in the pool (get in the pool pre-wet), then your skin and hair will absorb less chlorine. Link to comment

Is the anti-chlorine conditioner a leave-in conditioner? does it drip, can I wear swimming cap on it? Thanx again. Link to comment
Daria_Lane
link removed Great forum for black hair. You can do a search for swimming also you DONT need to use shampoo everyday. Infact black women with healthy hair dont shampoo often. We co-wash.(wash with conditioner). Get a good moisturizing condition ie Nexxus Humectress or ORS Replanishing and you'll be fine. Good Luck Link to comment

NightLily
If your hair is black.. why would it turn dirty blonde? For hair to become green it also has to be light colored. Or are you mixed or aborigines? I was on swim team for about 11 years so one thing I learned that you need to do is never let your hair dry before shampooing it. Whenever that would happen my hair would become more brittle. The other thing is to deep condition once a week. Link to comment

Cognitive_Canine
My boyfriend hair went from very dark brown to stark blonde. PLATINUM blonde. Link to comment
Sparkly Eyes
I honestly don't think swimming has any effect on black hair, I have black hair by the way, not even dark brown, actual black! Link to comment
lost1607307474
Personally, when I go swimming, I wash my hair afterwards because I don't want the chlorine staying in there - it can damage the hair and really dry the hair out. I would invest in a tight-fitting swimming hat, and tuck ALL of your hair into the swimming cap as best you can. It doesn't matter if a little bit of water still seeps through, but at least not as much water will get to the hair. Also invest in shampoo and conditioner that is designed for damaged hair - organic stuff I find is really great and moisturising for damaged hair. Also invest in some hair moisturizers and 'damage repair' serums to restore moisture into your hair. Link to comment
shikashika
I have dark brown hair and I was a competitive swimmer for years. I still swim a few times a week and my hair is still dark brown. I would also question the credibilty of a physician who would tell you to give up running for those reasons. Running does more good than harm! Link to comment

Running can be incredibly harmful for your joints and feet. Like the OP, my trainer also told me to stop running because of my flat feet and bad joints. Especially if you're carrying an injury. For some people running is great, for others it can worsen injury or joint pain. Link to comment
LAYAAN
Hey shikashika, I consulted a sports physician and I know she is right. She explained to me very properly. Link to comment

jengh
Try Aveda's black malva line. It's supposed to help keep hair from going brassy. When I was blonde, I used the blue malva to ensure it would stay ashy blonde. Link to comment

For some people running is great, for others it can worsen injury or joint pain. It can be... but there are always ways to be able to run.. like not running on a treadmill or running on trails rather than pavement. I wouldn't bother with a 'sports' physician who just told me to stop running. A person specialising in sports would give options as to where else to go running other than a treadmill. Link to comment

laisla
the best shampoo you can use while swimming is a clarifying shampoo right after a swim - it gets rid of all the gunk and chlorine. Link to comment
LAYAAN
Ok, quit running then. Never run again because the sports physician said so. hmm... I can read in between the lines. Quit running. Sure. My physician says not to run everyday. She said every 3rd day i.e. 2x/week is only what I should do, b'coz I'm getting injured often. I've been injured before as well as I ramped up my training. Link to comment
ghost69
i used to be on a swim team for some odd # of years. yep, something most of you probably don't know about me. anyways, put conditioner in it. always worked for me and all of the girls did it. you put the conditioner in your hair before getting in. don't rinse it off before getting in.
