DJBaby Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 My kitten is 7 months. I've had her since she was 8 weeks and I love her very much. She's absolutely adorable, but is she ever going to calm down a little? I'm in school for radio, and I have really expensive Bose headphones for my audio projects. I got to school yesterday to work on one of my projects and found that my kitten had chewed through the wire on my headphones in three places. They are now completely inoperable. Bose is going to replace them, but for just under half of what I paid for them. I'm so mad right now. How do I get her to stop doing these things? I feel like I'm constantly scolding her or squirting her, and she never learns! Any advice? Thanks.
ButterflyWrists Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 they are kittens they act like this for a while, they do stop though. just keep anything valuble out of her way.
CallingAllAngels Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 There is a spray that you can buy (I forget the name, but if you go to your local pet store, they will know what I'm talking about) that you can spray on wires and things you DON'T want your kitten to chew on. It has a bitter taste. Sour Apple I think it's called. Something like that. In the meantime, just know that your kitty did not do it on purpose...she's probably teething. You have to be very careful NOT to leave ANYTHING out that they can chew. I know sometimes we learn these lessons the hard way. Yes, she will out grow it after she gets older...especially after she gets fixed. Good luck to you.
DJBaby Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 they are kittens they act like this for a while, they do stop though. just keep anything valuble out of her way. That's the problem- I have a lot of expensive equipment with little wires and cords and most of them can't just be locked in a closet. I'm afraid that not only is she going to electrocute herself, but ruin all of my equipment!

I will try the spray- good idea, thank you. I got her from the Humane Society, so she is fixed. They wouldn't let me take her home with me until that was taken care of

EQD Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 try the spray, but if that doesnt work then maybe a pet isnt for you. or an adult animal would be better. whatever you do, dont get frustrated with your kitten, she doesnt speak your language and you dont know why she is doing these things. never take out your anger on an animal, and if it seems like you are about to then you need to seriously evaluate if you really need an animal in your life or if the one you have would be better suited somewhere else.

Woah. I would never take my anger out on any animal. Are you kidding? I love my cat.

indierockgrl Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 You know, i had a kitten and she drove me bananas that way, that is a kitten for ya. as she grew she eventually settled down. It helped too after she was spayed. If you got the patience then you will be A OK!!! Good luck!!!
DJBaby Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 not saying you would. but its dangerous nonetheless if anyone becomes frustrated. I'm a bit insulted. It is not dangerous. I have had pets all my life and I have never abused or mistreated a one of them. I think your advice was completely out of left field. I posted looking for advice on dealing with her crazy kittendom and you turned it into a dangerous situation...

My 12-year-old black lab passed away about 6 or 7 weeks ago and she's gotten crazier since then. I don't know if there's a correlation, but I wonder if she's rebelling because she misses her "big brother". Too bad I can't handle a puppy right now too

DJBaby Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 So sorry on the loss of your lab..... Aw- thanks He had cancer which was diagnosed a year ago, but we kept his life nice for almost a year with nutrition and close care. We actually made the appointment to have him put down, but he died before we could get him in the car to go to the vet. He was old and sick and tired. I miss him a lot, but he's not suffering anymore. I feel his presence all the time, though

I dont have my cat anymore but i swore off kittens after that...... dogs are the very best creatures ever... good luck with that kitty...
NJRon Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Sour Apple I think it's called. Something like that. It's called Bitter Apple. I've used it for dogs.. not for cats though. Two dogs hated it... the third loved it so much he would only chew on things that got coated in it. So, test it out on something you don't care much about first. Also, I believe it can stain... so it shoudl be fine for wires and such, but if you use it on cloth, check a small piece of it first. My cat, chewed on things when it was a kitten, but then grew out of it. Except for nibbling my nose.. never grew out of that one.

It DOES work on cats...I used it on both my cats when they were kittens!
tamachan09 Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Awe, your kitty is being a kitten Having said that, it can be frustrating if she keeps destroying things, lol. When my first kitty was a kitten, she would bite and chew my feet, hands, etc! What stopped her behavior? When she got two new brothers to chew and bite on! Now they are all 8 yrs old. I have to say my boys chews on things to annoy me, i.e. not having dinner ready. Wrigley chews on phone cords right in front of me until I do what he asks for and Chiclet chews on plastic... I don't deter them from doing that cuz I think they are cute. If they start chewing on electric cords, then yes, I will do something!

DJBaby Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 So weird... I went to my local pet store and they told me not to buy the bitter apple because it doesn't work. Like, they wouldn't even sell it to me. They told me if I wanted it I should go to PetSmart... Then, they suggested I spray tabasco sauce to save money. I really don't want my house smelling like a taco, though...

I would NOT use tabasco sause...that could make your kitten sick. Go to PetSmart.
