Biggest Loser Show

Recommended Posts

i saw a piece of this the other day. it's like a win-win situation. the ones that lose the most weight end up winning some prize right? $$$$? i don't know the prize, but why wouldn't you want to lose the most on the show anyways?

are some of the people on the show just so addicted to bad food and used to being lazy that they cannot lose it?

It's actually a pretty good show. They all work very hard, and very few actually DON"T lose. They are all working their butts off- literally lol - each week and most all of them DO lose weight but the winners are the ones who lose the most. You are right, it is a win/win. Even the 'losers' don't lose because they leave thinner, healthier and with a lot of new habits and training techniques learned.

They often show pics of prior contestants who didn't win, and the results are almost always amazing. Even after leaving the show they usually go on to keep losing and look so much better and you can tell how much their confidence is boosted.

This season there are a few women on there with such beautiful faces, one was a model. I can only imagine once this weight keeps rolling off what knock outs they will be.

There was a bizarre scene the other week where the guy trainer was crying and acting like a drama queen over his team being switched to Jilian. I am not a faithful watcher, just here and there, but that whole thing was ridiculous. They are all crying like they just lost a family member to death. It was way over dramatized IMO. He claimed it was the saddest moment in his life - guy must have lived a sheltered life is all I can say to that.

the dad and son i saw are sooo out of shape.

Yea but you should have seen them a few WEEKS ago. They actually have lost quite a bit of weight, believe it or not. You have to realize these guys and gals come to the show terribly obese in most cases - they won't slim down THAT much in just a few weeks....the father and son you are referring to have both lost a sizeable amount. It will just take a lot more to be really noticeable.

Agree. There was one girl this season that just wouldn't work hard, but she got voted off. I think a lot of them are just fed up with being fat, and with someone telling them what to eat, drink and how to work out, all you'll lose weight. Also, being on TV probably motivates them. Who wants to be lazy and not able to lose weight in front of the entire country?

I don't understand the point of this thread. So what? some people because of whatever reason(genetics, bad food habits, not exercising) are out of shape. Is this something new to you?

As far as why they also give money away, I think it is a good thing, cause off course it gives far more motivation to try and makes the show generally more exciting.

They are people that have ALOT to lose..most of them have been overweight since they were teenagers and they just kept getting bigger..

I don't watch the show alot but they work their butt off!! its not just a normal "diet" and some excercise ..its like diet/workout boot camp for the ones that find it hardest to lose the weight

People who are morbidly obese (as are people when they begin this show) usually have deeper issues than being 'lazy' or just needing to work out.

They are psychological eaters who eat beyond fullness and have learned to use food to deal with psychological issues (fear, loneliness, abuse, anxiety avoidance).

They may also have terrible self esteem issue and feel like 'why bother, i'm worthless' so they are alienated from others and figure why bother.

So weight is an extremely emotional issue for them, and losing that weight is about more than just educating them on eating and exercise. They need to gain self confidence and learn to relate to food as a fuel and not as an addiction.

So some people are just not able to easily kick the addiction unless they get underlying treatment for the issues that lead them to eat so much to begin with. Overeating can be so much more than just a bad habit, so it helps to have empathy for people who are morbidly obese and recognize that there is a lot more to that story than just 'laziness' or not working out.

It's like rehab except for food. Even people in rehab can manage to sneak drugs in, or get out to sneak drugs. So there's always a chance they are smuggling food somehow.

Also, weight loss can be very erratic due to water retention, hormones, salt intake, etc.

It is well known that you can follow a diet and for some reason lose nothing one week, then drop 5-7 the next, eating the same food.

did you post just to be a snot?

just seems kind of ironic if you are some out of shape person sitting on the couch watching the show. some motivation huh?

the point of the thread is i saw a piece of the show. some people were so upset they didn't lose any weight in a week. how? with all that work, something should come off if they stuck to the diet and all of that.

well, sorry if my post upset you. I thought there is no point in mocking them for being out of shape and not being able to lose weight. The thing is they do work hard, they have to, their trainers make them to. And they are given the food they eat, so they can't be eating too much. Losing weight is not necessarily as easy as it sounds. Not all people lose the same amount of weight with the same diet and everything.

so they are eating behind the scenes? i guess the show isn't as strict as they make it out to be. if it was, there would have a trainer or nutritionist assigned to watching them eat.

There are very few cases where someone doesn't lose any weight from week to week. Sometimes you can diet and exercise properly but reach a plateau and not lose a lb one week, or water retention, etc - that doesn't mean they failed or smuggled in treats. I am sure they COULD try that if they had a real desire to but I don't get the impression that they are. Even the ones kicked off for not working off still are exercising and dieting, just not at the level as everyone else.

To be honest, as thin as I am i am not sure I could survive a week on the show. They are put thru rigorous training on a daily basis.

i'm not upset at all. you just came in like i have no right to ask a question.

it still seems like the diet and workout isn't working. sure, maybe they are gaining muscle which would account for a lb here and there that didn't change, but going up a lb or 2 or staying even seems crazy if the show is so strick. like the other poster said, it's not that hard to cheat. the way i see it is you are on a show to get help, perhaps win some cash, why not do that to the best of your ability?

they are just so used to that lifestyle they have that they cannot do it?

mocking them? i just want to see everyone's thoughts.

Ghost, it is rare that they go up a lb in a week or not lose. That isn't very often. Usually they are losing anywhere from 6 - 8 lbs per week, per person. that is a LOT of weight and considering doctors do not advise more than a lb a week they are obviously working their butts off. They are not cheating...it sure wouldn't seem that way.

You'd have to watch the show more regularly to understand that they really are losing weight. It just doesn't seem that way to you only having watched it once and you seeing how large they are. Trust me they were even bigger when the show started.

well, gainging weight does not happen that much on the show and as jaded said it can be because of other reasons rather than not sticking to plans. Again as jaded say it is a hard lifestyle they have to experience at show. I know I would not be super comfortable with that.

thanks for answering in a civil manner JS. i guess i offended some asking. eesh. i guess seeing one show isn't enough perspective for me to wonder why they aren't doing better.

Oh you can be cocky sometimes, LOL, but i didn't think you were mocking or being cocky in this thread. LOL You just seemed curious.

well, i did only see one piece of a show. it was just the weigh-ins. they kind of blipped into showing their workouts. guess i'm too into fitness and hard headed when it comes to that to understand why they didn't lose more that week. watching more would put it into perspective for me i guess.

the irony: it was on the tv when i was riding the bike in the gym. maybe that is why i was like 'oh geez'.

lol, haha, that could be it. I watch the stupid hope and faith show while working out in gym. I guess I have to switch to other stuff to give me motivation to go faster and harder, lol.

i watched the show last night too. some of them didn't lose because they won a prize of '24 hours of luxury' at a very nice hotel/resort, and some of them overindulged at dinner. i think most of it was salt/sodium water retention. i think they'll make big numbers next week.

i love that show!!!!

I originally started watching this show just out of boredom when there was nothing else on, and for some reason, I got a little hooked on it. o_O Dunno why. I've really only followed off and on the last 3-4 seasons, though, and haven't seen any of the current one (I didn't like the whole "couples/ partners" gimmick they started tacking on a few seasons ago). Anyway, I've heard that the method in which they lose weight on this show is "unhealthy", and that a lot of them end up gaining a lot of the weight back after the show ends. I've heard that the winner from the first or second season, or something, is nearly back up to the original weight he started at on the show. Crazy, huh?

I'm most interested in the show when there's some "game play" going on; like, a few seasons ago, there was this one guy who, at the weigh-in, put ON an outrageous amount of weight, like 13+ pounds, and then the other contestants found out he did that on purpose in an effort to eliminate people on the other team or something. And last season, there were these two women on there that were incredibly annoying, one in particular was pretty horrible (she frequently admitted, even to the trainer, that she really didn't care about losing weight and only cared about the money), so I got drawn in hoping to see her lose in the end.
