Hello All,

My doctor recently perscribed Lexapro and I am a bit nervous about taking it. I have never taken anything like this in my life and was wondering if anybody had anything to say about it really working and also, what they experienced as far as side effects. Any input would help.

Thanks so much!

Hi, I have been taking Lexapro for at least 2 years. I have chronic depression and have been on them all! I am very happy with Lexapro. The side effects are very minimum if any. You don't have your sex, so the only thing I can think of is if you are a guy it might effect your sex drive. I can drink alcohol with it, it doesn't make me sleepy or jittery, it has had no effect on my appetite. If you miss a dose and you wait too long to take it you might get dizzy. It is a very mild antidepressant but works for my depression. I get blue once in a while but that is it.

I was prescribed it for anxiety, and was completely against taking any meds...because my sister is bi-polar and has been on so many drugs that numbed who she was, but took it just to get back on my feet. After 2 months it started making me feel weird...like out of tune with reality so i stopped. I do have to say it helped to get me back on my feet, but i advise against using it longer than 3 months.

i was initally not wanting to take drugs, but honestly, lexapro has worked out really great for me. i have both anxiety and depression (yay, what a fun combination!!!) i'm ok most of the time, except when i am stressed out. but i'm in grad school, so i'm stressed most of the time. i do have physical symptoms when i am anxious (light headedness, dizziness, fatigue), so yeah, i really did need the drugs so i could get the symptoms out of the way so i could study!!!

there are downsides. you may experience some side effects, everyone is different. most side effects will go away in a few weeks. but honestly, i've had a really good experience with it, and the pros have outweighed the cons. i'd start on a lower dose and see how that works. if it's not enough, you can up the dose also.

for me, lexapro sort of helps 'control' my emotions so they don't get too out of hand and i can deal with a stressful situation objectively without freaking out.

Thank you, Annie24 - it sounds like our symptoms are similar... I have a really tough time with anxiety and I have been struggling for years. This is the first time I have ever asked for help, and I was def nervous about putting something like this in my body. Something that will help control my emotions so that they don't get too out of hand is exactly what I need... I have never been overly sensitive to anysort of medication so I am hoping that it is the same with this one... I guess we will see.

Thank you for the input, everyone

I've been on Lexapro about 4 months, and it's worked great for me for anxiety.

I'm not on anything else but 10mg of it and my b-control.

I've been taking it for a year and a half and it helped a TON with anxiety and sadness. definitely give it a chance. Also i had no side effects other than a tiny bit of nausea for like 2 days

Yeah, I'm VERY sensitive to medicines and I didn't really notice any side affects.

I was jittery for the first day, I had like no appetite the first week, and I had huge pupils for 2 weeks. Other then that I have nothing. Other then acid trip dreams, but then that's normal for me. Lol Lexapro just helps with the creativity.

I've also had a problem with constipation, and I noticed with the lexapro if I ever get that way I drink coffee and I'm fixed! Ah Laxapro.

Oh it has also made me so freaking emotional! I get teary from so many stupid stuff. Even if I just see a cute doggy! And everytime someone is rude to me, I'd wish very much that they would die.

I've been on it a year and a half. No side effects (thank god, I was so worried about gaining weight!)... I had extreme dry mouth for the first week or so but it went away fast.

It helped a lot with my anxiety as well as chronic depression.

Lexapro is weight neutral.

I couldn't eat anything my first week.

If you gain weight and say lexapro is the cause, it's not. It's your fault.

Hello All,

Thank you so much for your responses! I took my first pill before I went to bed last night... I am only on 10mg and my birth control pills. I have never been on anything other than bc pills so this whole thing is new for me.

Anyway, I did notice the dry mouth issue and also, I felt a bit nauseous this morning - but it subsided. I finally ate something, but did notice that I am not really that hungry and my stomache just feels unsettled. Other than that, have not noticed anything.

Really, I just feel like I was born without the switch to shut your brain down for over analyzing things and worrying - it has caused some serious insomnia and I have been dealing with it for years - was always to embarrassed to go and see someone and a little fearful bc I don't want to be on pills for the rest of my life - however, at this point I am desperate as it is pretty much gotten so that it seems unmanagable and it was time to try and ask for help....

I appreciate all of your responses as it makes me less fearful about what I am doing and more happy about it - it seems to have worked for many of you and I hope it can do the same for me

Fingers crossed!

P.S. I am going to try some therapy as well, as my Dr said that the real way to make sure I do not become reliant on pills is to still do the heavy lifting and deal with the emotional side of anxiety, as well - she said Lexapro and therapy should be considered tools on the road to recovery - or at least, relief.
