justally Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 The last 3 books I've read. And they all talk about the same thing. I felt like the preacher was talking to us in the Choir. Fast Food Nation was an excellent read, though. In Defense of Food had a couple of places where it really could have been organized better. The Ultramind Solution was pure marketing with an interesting medical twist on things; not something I'd do for no reason. Then again, the diet I chose to follow pretty much is the diet he recommends already. I'm two weeks into my own tailored version, and I feel like stopping after reading this. It really plays to a gullible person...I chose it for me, before I read the book though. *sigh* I'll stick to it, but I hate following an idiot. It wasn't well written at all. Marketing genius, he may have. He is not a writer.
Binoo Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Have you read Don't Eat This Book by Morgan Spurlock? I don't find it preachy at all and it's actually one of my favourite books. It's written by the guy who did Supersize Me.
justally Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 I hate Spurlock. Ugh. Or rather, I dislike Super Size Me. I felt it was biased, blamed the food for some of the things soda does to you (Mountain Dew has the same affect to your liver as alcohol. Don't believe me? My biology teacher experienced that personally, and had his doctors come and speak to us.), and in general, was filmed less as a documentary and more like a shock film. Or so I feel. Don't get me wrong, Fast Food Nation was a great book. I really liked it. It's only preachy towards the end...and by far less than In Defense of Food. Thank you for the recommendation! I'll be sure to check it out next. Don't let it be said that I let personal misinterpretations ever keep me from exploring new horizons!
Binoo Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I found the book was a bit more broad than the documentary. It talked more about junk food in general rather than just McDonald's, though it did make several references because of the Supersize Me thing. I've never read Fast Food Nation but I'll also look into that.
