pleeze.help Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Has anyone else ever been on or is on Celexa (Citalopram)? I've been taking it for about a week now. I have only been on it for so long and I haven't had any negative side effects and I am feeling 70% better than I have in a long time. It makes me really happy to know that I can get over my fears and anxieties with just a pill once a day. Of course, I have to work on my insecurities and fears, but I am working on them. How long can I stay on Celexa? Will the doctor have to up my dose at some point or prescribe a different medication? I really don't mind taking a pill everyday for the rest of my life, if it makes me feel happy. It's the best thing I could do for myself.
avman Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Celexa usually takes a lot longer to get into your system. I'm glad you are feeling much better already. I'm just surprised it is so quick. Your doctor will work with you to figure out whether you will always need it or whether it's just temporary. Everybody is different.

I'm still having some negative thoughts, but I have become more positive over the course of the week. I'm sure I will feel a lot better in about a month or so. If doses are skipped can that be a problem?
_Asti_ Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 It's different for everybody. I was horribly ill on it. It didn't work for me. I went to Zoloft and things were great. I know people who thought Zoloft was horrible. It's a personal thing. My friend has been on Celexa for years. As for how long, that depends. If you get off of it and things return, well then you need to get back on it. If symptoms start to reappear, they may increase your dosage. I know for me personally...my dosage was increased on all anti-depressants I was on just because I had to reach a certain level, and they didn't want to start me on that amount right away, they wanted it done gradually. Those would be questions that I would direct at the doctor or psych dealing with your case.

pleeze.help Posted February 1, 2009 Author Posted February 1, 2009 I still need to work on my anxiety. Will it get better after being on the anti-depressants for so long?

Missed doses can produce withdrawal side effects.
jengh Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Is it true that anti-depressants make you feel like a zombie? If you're taking the wrong one for your body... Everyone is different and reacts to ADs differently. What works for one person could be hell on another. I've had some ADs make me feel like a zombie but some also really helped.
Dmd Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 I've been prescribed and taking celexa along with buspar for 8 days now. Celexa for the depression and buspar for the anxiety. While my anxiety has lessened, the depression I feel has not even budged. The doctor told me it can often take up to a month to see any positive affects from Celexa. It was recommended that I stay on Celexa for at least 6 months, no longer than 12. I was told, if the depression doesn't go away, the dose will be upped. If it does, the dose will be gradually brought down and eventually I won't have to take the pill. I'm glad you're happy! I hope this helped.
_Asti_ Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Is it true that anti-depressants make you feel like a zombie? They did for me. I called it apathetic. That's the best way that I could describe it. I stayed at a pretty steady level, didn't get overly upset, but also didn't get overly happy. It took quite some time when I got off them to finally return to normal. But, it helped me work through things, solve problems, and fix underlying causes and work on ME.
avman Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 If doses are skipped can that be a problem? Do not skip doses. You need to maintain a constant level of the drug in your body for it to work. Skipping doses or taking it irregularly can cause withdrawal symptoms and a crash in your mood.
Dmd Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 I still need to work on my anxiety. Will it get better after being on the anti-depressants for so long? Perhaps ask the doctor about a separate medication to treat the anxiety as well. Is it true that anti-depressants make you feel like a zombie? It depends on how severe your depression is, the dosage and which anti-depressant you're put on. Celexa has absolutely no side affects for me.
pleeze.help Posted February 1, 2009 Author Posted February 1, 2009 Perhaps ask the doctor about a separate medication to treat the anxiety as well. I think my anxiety is more of a mind thing. I need to stop being a persecutionist. It depends on how severe your depression is, the dosage and which anti-depressant you're put on. Celexa has absolutely no side affects for me. Me either. What is buspar?
Dmd Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Buspar is what I take specifically for the anxiety. I take a 10mg dose, 3 times a day. I went from anxiety that would gradually increase into a panic attack, to almost no such feelings in just 8 days, it worked very well for me very shortly. I still have some anxiety, but it's much less severe and doesn't result in the attacks.
sarey Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Shesh, I took one dose of this and it was straight back to the doctor for me. I had TERRIBLE side effects. I'm glad however it is working out for you.
dragon lady Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I take celexa and it works pretty well for me. It doesn't make me incredibly happy or anything, but it stops me from having horrible lows like I used to. My main problem with it is that it makes me so tired. I sleep so much these days! My doctor had me try Buspar once and it was an absolute nightmare. It sent me into a state of extreme mania. I didn't sleep for about a week. I was raging like a mad woman. For some reason it made me insatiably horny too. Very strange. Now I take Klonopin for my anxiety. It works like a charm, but it is addictive. I'm slowly trying to come off it so I only have to take it when needed, but it's tough. I feel quite ill when I start cutting back on the dosage.
